Akron Traditions sponsoring First Year Experience event Aug. 24

The 4th Annual Akron Traditions will be held on Sunday, August 24, at EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall. This event is primarily for new students and serves as the official bridge to the First Year Experience at The University of Akron.

Dr. Yvonne Thornton, author of The Ditchdigger's Daughters, will be the guest speaker for the event. She will join University officials in welcoming the new students.

The Ditchdigger's Daughters is the University College Summer Reading book for 2003.

North Campus Parking Deck Opening Aug. 25

The North Campus Parking Deck (Lot 26) will be open for parking effective Monday, August 25th, with approximately 1,150 spaces.

The Parking Services offices have moved to 255 E. Buchtel Ave., on the street level of the new North Campus Parking Deck. The entrance is on Buchtel Avenue across from the Visitor A parking lot and the Robertson Parking Deck and is labeled appropriately. Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Z Day!!! Aug. 27

The University kicks off the academic year with Z Day. Z Day is a celebration for all Zips! An entire day of live music, entertainment, lots of give-aways, and food -- fun for faculty, staff and students.

From Noon to 4 p.m. listen to live music with DJ Kenny, have lunch at the Welcome Back Cafe, have fun with your friends with several inflatable games, and pick up all the give-aways and information from booths staffed by student organizations and departments. Also check out the ALLTEL Touchdown and Tailgate Tour.

From 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. hang out at the Welcome Back Cafe under the umbrella tables and relax to the summer sounds of The University of Akron Steel Drum Band.

From 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the Pepsi stage comes alive with two local favorite bands -- Crimson Rain and No Big Deal -- and a live broadcast with radio station WONE. Hang out on the grass, bring a lawn chair, or dance in the street!

Then at 9:00 p.m. join Zippy, The University of Akron Marching Band, Zip cheerleaders, and the Football coaching staff and players for the Beat Kent State Pep Rally! All Fun -- All Day!

This event is sponsored by Pepsi, Student Development, Student Affairs, Athletics, Student Union, Greek Life, University Program Board, Greek Programming Comittee, Campus Focus, Residence Hall Program Board, Residence Hall Council, and the University Bookstore.

ZIPSlive Coaches Radio Show and Student Pep Rally Aug. 26

Join UA athletics head coaches and student-athletes at the Spaghetti Warehouse, 510 Main St. in Downtown Akron each Tuesday night starting August 26 at 7:00 p.m. for ZIPSlive.

The first 50 UA students who present their ZIPcard will receive a FREE pasta buffet, beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will also be drawings for door prizes, free 32 oz. ZIPS logo cups and other giveaways for all students in attendance.

Students can also register to be a part of the 2003-04 Zips Crew student spirit group at this event.

ZIPcards are accepted at the Spaghetti Warehouse so come on down and help ZIPS Athletics kick off the 2003 sports season in style.

Beat Kent State Pep Rally as part of Z-Day 2003 Aug. 27

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to put on their Blue and Gold for the first Pep Rally of the 2003-04 school year on the Union Street Commons in the center of Campus.

The UA Marching band, "Ohio's Pride", will be performing as participants cheer on the Zips football team the night before the big game with the Kent State University Golden Flashes.

Akron has won six straight games against KSU, including last year's season ending 48-10 win at Kent State.

ZIPSfest at The Rubber Bowl & ZIPSexpress Shuttle Service Aug. 28

The 2003 University of Akron football season kicks off with a FREE concert for all University of Akron Students at the Rubber Bowl.

The ZIPSexpress Shuttle Bus Service from the UA Campus to the Rubber Bowl will begin running at 5:45 p.m. with pick-up stops at Gallucci Hall and the New Student Union. Look for the ZIPSexpress signs for the specific pickup stations for this FREE shuttle service.

The ZIPSfest festivities start at 5:00 p.m. when the gates to ZIPSfest open outside of the stadium's main gate, featuring the ALLTEL College Football Tailgate Tour and other special exhibits.

At 5:30 p.m. the sounds of Red Wanting Blue rock the 97.5 FM WONE stage. Red Wanting Blue has established an incredibly devoted following of fans across the Midwest.  Two years ago, the band adopted Columbus, Ohio as their home, after forming three years in the small Ohio town of Athens.  They are a melody-driven, four-piece rock band with an ingenuitive songwriting style, and a very demanding presence.

The 46th Battle for the Wagon Wheel Trophy takes center stage at the Rubber Bowl Thursday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m. as arch rivals Akron and Kent State get together for their annual gridiron clash.

A crowd of over 25,000 fans is expected for the game so be sure and get to the Rubber Bowl early for all of the festivities.

UA students get in FREE for all games with their ZIPcard and can bring up to four non-UA guests for only $1 each.

ZIPcards are accepted at the concession stands at the Rubber Bowl and for all events at Rhodes Arena.

The University of Akron Health Services, in collaboration with Maxim Healthcare Services, is sponsoring a Meningitis Immunization Clinic for interested students on Thursday, August 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Clinic will be held in the lobby of Robertson Dining Hall.

The cost of the immunization is $85. Payments may be made with cash, personal check, or charge.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
