Microsoft agreement expires on student software

As of June 30, The University of Akron’s Microsoft Campus Agreement and subsequent licenses expires. The Agreement was signed three years ago and included a “student subscription” in which students could use but not own Office 2003 Professional, Front Page 2003, Publisher 2003 and Widows XP Professional.

The new Agreement, which goes into effect on July 1, does not include the student subscription option due to escalating costs. As a result of the current Agreement expiring and per the End User License Agreement signed by students when they acquired the software media from Computer Solutions, student’s running Office 2003 Professional, Front Page 2003, Publisher 2003 and Widows XP Professional must stop using it. There is no need to return anything to the University. If you acquired the software within the last three years and graduated by June 30, 2007, per the Agreement you now own the software and may continue using it.

Under the new contract, students can purchase to own Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Business, and Office 2007 Enterprise from Computer Solutions. These programs are available at discounts through Computer Solutions (http://www.uakron.edu/its/hoss/compstore). For example, Windows Vista Business, which retails at $200, is available to enrolled students for $95.

For more information, contact Computer Solutions at 330-972-5308 or compstore@uakron.edu.
