spacer image
The University of Akron will say "thank you" to its students with a Student Appreciation Day Celebration at two times on Wednesday, Sept. 12:
  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m for day students, and
  • 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for evening students.

Each college and several UA departments will be hosting booths in front of their primary buildings. Stop by and visit with your professors and others who are committed to your success. Plus, while supplies last, there will be free hot dogs, "Fear the Roo" T-shirts and other goodies. (To ensure that our supply last as long as possible, students will be asked to show their valid student ID.)

Take part in the fun across the Main Campus and the Wayne Campus on Wednesday, Sept. 12 -- Student Appreciation Day!

Outdoor warning system will be tested twice on Wednesday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University's outdoor warning system will be tested at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. The system is routinely tested on the second Wednesday of every month unless threatening weather is expected.

You do not need to take any action when you hear Wednesday’s test. This test is being conducted to ensure that faculty, staff and students are familiar with the siren.

If a tornado warning is issued for Summit County, the University's police department will activate the outdoor warning system. If you hear the sirens and it is not a test, you should seek shelter in the lowest accessible level of a nearby building. Lower-level stairwells provide excellent shelter areas, as long as they are not located on an outside wall of the building. In buildings without accessible lower levels, interior rooms, such as offices and restrooms, provide the best area to take shelter.

Do not take shelter in large rooms or areas such as gyms with large roof spans. Also, avoid sheltering in location in close proximity to glass windows and doors.

You need to stay in the shelter areas until given the all-clear signal. The all-clear signal is announced to the campus two ways:
  • by voice over the outdoor warning system; and
  • broadcasted over the campus two-way radio system to those individuals who have radios.
The tornado warning and all-clear signals will be communicated additional ways as new emergency notification technology becomes available.

The outdoor warning system is not intended to be heard inside buildings. UA is currently researching a system that would enable UA safety personnel to broadcast emergency messages inside buildings across campus.

If you have questions, call the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety at ext. 330-972-6866.

Repairs planned for Exchange Street deck
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Sections of the Exchange Street Parking Deck will be closed periodically this fall to allow for isolated repairs in the flooring and expansion joints. These repairs do not pose an immediate safety concern, but experts have recommended that they should be replaced sooner rather than later. The work must be done while the temperature is above freezing.

The problem was discovered over the summer during a routine cleaning and inspection of the deck.

Once a repair schedule has been approved, e-mail announcements will be sent to students.
