Student Email Mail Pilot Extended Through Mid-November
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University pilot of MS Live Hotmail and Gmail to determine their appropriateness as an alternative to our current student email system has been extended to run through mid-November.

The University needs student volunteers to test the email system and provide feedback about it.

There will be some relatively minimal amount of effort required in terms of getting things set up.

If you are interested in testing either MS Windows Live Mail or Gmail, go to https://gozips.uakron.edu/zid/app/email/pilot/index.cgi and log in with your UAnet ID and Password. At the bottom of the page, select either “Read details about Windows Live Hotmail” or “Read details about Google Mail”. You can sign up for the service you wish to test from this location.

If you have questions about the pilot, contact Keith Hunt at keith@uakron.edu..

Singers Chinua Hawk and Chris Cauley--Back by Popular Demand! Sept. 18
7:17 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Chinua is Nigerian for “God’s own blessing.” The soaring name Hawk comes from the Native American side of his heritage. Recently, Chinua won the Billboard Magazine Indie Artist World Series. With a powerful, soulful voice and lyrics that mirror life experience, Chinua has taken the country by storm. When not performing on college campuses, he has taken the stage and recorded with such artists as Celine Dion and Wyclef Jean.

A scrappy little kid with a guitar…that’s how Chris Cauley describes himself. But anyone who thinks that’s all there is to this 22 year old talented singer/songwriter/musician hasn’t seen him perform. Chris can strip a ballad down to such a simple, uncluttered intimate sound that he takes the most raucous crowd down to complete silence. Simple, contemporary acoustic rock with a hint of blues and voice of soul…that’s the music and talent of Chris Cauley!

Join The Zips Programming Network for a free advanced screening of "The Kingdom" before it opens in theatres on September 28.

Here's a synopsis of the movie: After an attack takes the lives of several American civilians in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the FBI decides to take action by sending a team to capture those responsible, but finds itself competing against rival intelligence agencies. Hot shot Special Agent Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx) gets the task of a lifetime when he is picked to lead the elite group. With agents Janet Mayes (Jennifer Garner), Adam Leavitt (Jason Bateman), and Grant Sykes (Chris Cooper) at his side, he is confident that they will be able to infiltrate and bring down the terrorist cell within a week's time. Once there, however, the group finds itself slowed by the heat, the culture and the politics. It isn't long before the foursome begins to doubt the reliability of their informants and allies, which eventually leads them to question their own abilities. With local law enforcement more of a hindrance than help, Fleury finds unexpected aid from a sympathetic Saudi police captain. Soon, the FBI unit picks up the track, leading them to the inevitable showdown with the opposing force.

Please arrive early because space is limited and because prior advanced screenings have been crowded. Students will not be permitted to save space in the line for others.

Join The Zips Programming Network for our September movie with the showing of Ocean's Thirteen.

The last time we saw Danny Ocean's crew, they were paying back ruthless casino mogul Terry Benedict after stealing millions from him. However, it's been a while since they've come back together, which is all about to change. When one of their own, Reuben Tishkoff builds a hotel with known casino owner Willy Banks, the last thing he ever wanted was to get cut out of the deal personally by the loathsome Banks. Banks' attitude even goes so far as to finding the amusement in Tishkoff's misfortune when the double crossing lands Reuben in the hospital because of a heart attack. However, Danny and his crew won't stand for Banks and what he's done to a friend. Uniting with their old enemy Benedict, who himself has a vendetta against Banks; the crew is out to pull off a major plan. One that will unfold on the night Banks' newest hot spot opens up, when the crew is out to bankrupt one of the city's most despised businessmen. But they're not in this for the money, but for the revenge.

The movie will be shown September 20, 21, and 22 at 8pm in The Gardner Theatre on the second floor of the Student Union. The movie is free to all UA students with a Zip Card and $1 for guests.

The Archives of the History of American Psychology invites you to participate in a one-day conference on Friday, October 5th, 2007, 8:00am – 4:30pm, at The Martin University Center entitled “Psychological Perspectives on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Persons: A Retrospective and Prospective Discussion”.

In 1957 Evelyn Hooker published “The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual.” This classic article is widely credited as starting the movement to depathologize homosexuality. The 50-year anniversary of her publication provides an opportunity to reflect on progress that has been made and discuss next steps in moving the dialogue forward. A distinguished group of scholars will review historical and contemporary developments related to psychology and society’s attention to the GLBT community.

This event is FREE for all University of Akron faculty, staff and students with proof of UA identification. Complete program and registration materials are posted on the Archives of the History of American Psychology website.

This conference is possible with generous support from the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Education, Department of Psychology, Institute for Teaching and Learning, Summit College, University Libraries, and the Women’s Studies Department.
