BUS Joins Forces with Athletics at Rubber City Classic Sept. 20

The University of Akron Department of Athletics has joined forces with Black United Students to provide 7,000 tickets to the inaugural Rubber City Classic which pits the UA football team against Howard University, a member of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These ticket were distributed to youth across Northeast Ohio during the week leading up to the Saturday, September 20, event at the Rubber Bowl.

Tickets are $17 for reserved seats and $12 for general admission while UA Students are admitted free of charge when they present their ZIPcard student ID. UA students may also being up to four guests for only $1 per person. The Zips Express Shuttle Serrvice will provide free transportation for UA students to and from the Rubber Bowl beginning at 5:15 p.m. with pick-up locations at Gallucci Hall and the Student Union.

Funding for the UA Athletics Diversity Scholarship Fund will come from the proceeds of Rubber City Classic activities, both this weekend and at events to be staged throughout the year.

The mission of Black United Students is to enhance the financial, educational and social involvement of minority students on campus and to establish the means by which to recognize, in a positive way, the contributions made by African Americans.

Black United Students President Amber Payden said being able to provide this opportunity to area urban youth is important for the organization.

"I think that the Rubber City Classic is an excellent way to reach out to the children of Akron," said Payden. "Many times we focus in on what we are doing as adults in the community, but leave out the most important aspect, children who are the future of our community. The Rubber City Classic brings a brand new outlook on Akron. It gives us pride and joy to be able to say that we are capable of putting on a great event for the community. Children of all races can enjoy the bands, fireworks and, of course, the football game."

The Rubber City Classic is the first in a series of athletics contests in which an Akron team will face a member of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), with a portion of the proceeds from the event going to the Akron Athletics Diversity Scholarship Fund for distribution to a current UA student who hails from Northeast Ohio.

The excitement from the game in the Rubber Bowl is expected to carry over even after the final gun sounds as the "Battle of the Bands," presented by Subway, commences once the contest ends. The UA Marching Band, the Howard University "Showtime" Marching Band and the Central State Marching Marauders will square off during a postgame celebration. The Joy Park Steppers will be the lead act in the postgame show and perform along with the Central State University band in ZIPSfest prior to the game. The grand finale of the evening will be a fireworks show, presented by the Akron Beacon Journal.
