University explains guidelines for public rallies
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Every year, some members of the campus community voice concerns about political and religious expression and similar actions on our campus, wondering why the University does not limit such actions or if the University's tolerance of those actions implies an endorsement. Here is a clarification of the University's position as a public institution.

Do the actions of a group or individual exercising political and religious expression on campus violate the law? Generally, the answer is no. The matter at hand concerns basic First Amendment principles. Public streets and sidewalks are generally considered traditional public forums, generally open to all people to speak and express themselves as long as they abide by content-neutral governmental restrictions regarding the time, place and manner of the expressive activity.

Because the University is a public institution, and its property is considered “government” property, certain limited areas on campus may be designated as public forums or limited public forums, and some areas may be designated as “non-forum” property to be used only for its governmental purpose.

When a speaker or group is operating in an area designated as a traditional public forum, the University is prohibited from dictating and censoring the content of legally defensible expressions of free speech. This principle applies generally to free speech in all its forms, including even controversial or potentially offensive expressions. A limited or “designated” public forum — in contrast — may be just as open as a traditional public forum, or it may be limited to use by specific groups, such as student or student organizations.

Does the presence of a group on campus mean that the University is endorsing a position? No. Please do not confuse the presence of a group on our campus as the University's endorsement of its beliefs or actions or expressions. A public institution such as ours is a place for ideas to be expressed, deliberated and debated under the protection of our state and our nation’s Constitutions.

Individuals and organizations are permitted to express their views and invite student participation in certain areas on campus as long as their activities do not infringe on the rights of others or on student learning (for instance, by the use of loudspeakers next to an academic building). All public universities in the country are bound by such basic First Amendment principles.

Further, freedom of expression serves an important educational function at a public university, and it is entirely consistent with our role of encouraging the open exchange of ideas. Indeed, college campuses in America have long been identified by the courts as the “marketplace of ideas” in the context of First Amendment expressions.

The Lanford Wilson Festival Oct. 4 - Oct. 20
8:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
This October, The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration will celebrate acclaimed American playwright Lanford Wilson. The Lanford Wilson Festival features productions of two plays by Wilson. Fifth of July runs October 4-6 and Oct. 11-13 at 8 p.m. and October 7 at 2 p.m. at Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, 157 University Ave. THE HOT L BALTIMORE runs Oct. 11-13 and Oct. 18-20 at 8 p.m. and October 14 at 2 p.m. at Paul A. Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall, 328 Buchtel Common.

Tickets for individual performances are $10 general admission, and $6 for seniors and UA faculty, staff, and students. A $2 discount will be given when tickets are purchased for both productions. The ticket office opens one hour before each performance. For reservations call 330-972-7895. A group discount is available in advance for 10 or more patrons. Visit the Web site for more information. The mature content of these productions may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Fifth of July, directed by Susan Speers, Professor of Theatre at The University of Akron, is the first of a trilogy including Talley’s Folly and Talley and Son. These plays make up a cycle bout the Talley family of Lebanon, Missouri. As Kenneth Talley and his companion Jed are visited by friends and family, sharp, witty banter gives way to the lost hopes and dreams of the characters in a disillusioned America in the wake of the Vietnam War.

Set in the lobby of a decaying residential hotel, THE HOT L BALTIMORE explores the lives of residents faced with eviction when their home is condemned. THE HOT L BALTIMORE is directed by Sean Cercone, familiar to area theatre lovers as Artistic Director of Carousel Dinner Theatre.
