The University of Akron Police Department encourages students, faculty and staff to be cautious when in the area south of campus, especially after dark. Two incidents have been reported recently where UA students have been robbed off campus. The first incident occurred at approximately 11:40 Tuesday night on Sherman Street. The second took place yesterday at 3:15 p.m. at a Sumner Street apartment. Three suspects have been arrested in yesterday's case, and UA and Akron police still are investigating the other case. If you have any information about the Sherman Street incident at 11:40 p.m. Sept. 18, please call the UA Police at 330-972-7263.

UAPD is working with the Akron Police Department to increase police presence in the area.

UA Police Chief Paul Callahan reminds everyone of these general safety precautions:

  • Use the campus escort service. Patrol members will escort you between campus locations from 5 p.m. to midnight nightly up to and including Friday, Dec. 22. Call 330-972-7263 to request the service.
  • Walk in a group, if possible.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • If you feel threatened, cross the street, find an emergency phone, or enter a store or business. There are about 50 emergency phones on campus, distinguished by their blue lights. Operational around the clock, the phones connect directly to the UA police dispatcher.
  • Have your keys in hand as you approach your car. Check the back seat before you enter.
  • Alcohol and other drugs can impair your perceptions and decision-making. Do not place yourself in a vulnerable position by being intoxicated or under the influence of other drugs.
  • Even in your home, exercise caution. Use door peepholes and chain locks, and do not leave doors or windows open. Be aware of strangers in the vicinity of your home.
  • Program the University's emergency line into your cell phone: 330-972-7123. Or call 9-1-1.
