VOICE YOUR SUPPORT!
The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) provides coverage for children of parents who cannot afford to pay. Although it has existed for ten year and was reauthorized by Congress this year, President Bush vetoed the legislation that would increase the federal tobacco tax to help fund health insurance coverage for uninsured children. If passed, this would prevent 1.9 million children from being lifelong tobacco users and would save 590,000 children who would not cut their short with tobacco use, while providing health insurance for millions of low income children.

Send an email to the Website below to a member of Congress to override this veto!

If you are struggling to pay for college and are taking out a lot of student loans then please look into the easiest scholarship the University of Akron has to offer. Our scholarship is based upon you working 2 days a month and a few weeks over the summer, approx 40 days a year. This scholarship is NOT based upon GPA like most scholarships. You will be working for the State of Ohio and they reward you with a full tuition scholarship to University of Akron. You will also earn about $450 a month for those two days a month. All I will ask of each student is to call and see if you qualify and learn more about how easy it is. Work 2 days a month be a student at University of Akron the other 28! 20 years ago I was skeptical too, but this program helped me get my degree, get part-time pay and work for the great state of Ohio. The Ohio National Guard is based right here on campus at Schrank Hall South lower level. Please call at least to see if you qualify. 330-972-7959 ask for James Youngdahl

If you are prior military and are paying for school with your GI Bill money...then WHY? Pocket that money! When you join the Ohio National Guard you qualify to receive 100% of tuition/fees paid with our scholarship you will get. That means your $1,200 or so GI bill money goes straight to you every month! No added training! Just start working 1 weekend a month locally here in Akron area! Get paid about $275 for those 2 days, and go enjoy your other 28 days! You could even try us out for a year, change your MOS, be NON deployable and get $4,500 for school next semester! You don't know what you are missing out on! PLEASE call me at 330-972-7959 at Schrank Hall South lower level. The University has me ON campus for a reason. Either way thank you for serving your country. Ask for SFC James Youngdahl

Join the Rape Crisis Center, University of Akron Women’s Studies Program and members of the surrounding community on Friday, October 19th, 2007 as we rally and march in Downtown Akron and “Take Back the Night!” Take Back the Night is an international movement that raises awareness and breaks the silence about oppression and violence against women.

The event is scheduled to open at 6:00pm in the Atrium of the Polsky Building at the University of Akron with a social services information fair. The pre-march rally includes Akron Municipal Court Judge, Alison McCarty, delivering the keynote address at 6:30 followed by a one hour “speak out” from 7:00-8:00pm. Students and members of the community are invited to speak out against violence against women and share their experiences. Following the speak out, participants will march through downtown Akron and return to the Polsky building for refreshments and entertainment. Akron’s Clothesline Project—a visual art display created by women whose lives have been touched by violence--will be on view throughout the evening and supplies will be available to those desiring to create their own shirt. This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.

NEW WORLD PERFORMANCE LABORATORY OPENS DOORS TO CREATIVE PROCESS
Frankenstein (A De-Monstration) performs October 25-November 3 in Sandefur Theatre on The University of Akron campus

AKRON, OH –The New World Performance Laboratory, Northeast Ohio’s own world-class alternative theatre company, will perform a workshop production of its latest creation Frankenstein (A De-Monstration) based on Mary Shelley’s popular gothic novel, October 25, 26, November 1, 2, and 3 at 8pm in Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall on The University of Akron campus. Tickets are $10 general admission and $6 for students and seniors. For reservations contact NWPL at 330-867-3299.

Frankenstein (A De-Monstration) is a collective creation by the internationally acclaimed theatre ensemble. Based on Mary Shelley’s novel and elements of her life, the work investigates the gothic horror genre while posing questions about the current state of humanity: What is the body? And what is its relationship to the soul? This production promises to be a visceral theatre experience. The company will open its doors to the public to share in the constructing of the performance in five special workshop performances/open rehearsals this autumn. The final production will premiere in Spring 2008. Directed by NWPL co-artistic director and University of Akron theatre professor James Slowiak, Frankenstein (A De-Monstration) displays the deeply detailed physical style of NWPL’s actors. The production features NWPL co-artistic director Jairo Cuesta and company members Debora Totti, Chris Buck, Megan Elk, Justin Hale, Jamie G. Hale, and Alex White. Costume design is by Inda Blatch-Geib, lighting design by Chris Hariasz and photographs by Andrew McAllister.

The purpose of this campus and community event is to define what it means to be well-educated, that is, what are the necessary skills and knowledge that every student should attain for future success.

The conversations will be arranged so each individual table will hold a deliberative discussion between a student, faculty member, staff, administrator, contract professional and a community member. This array of voices and opinions should yield an energetic dialog where we learn from each other’s perspective.

Higher education has become essential for future economic success. On November 8th we will define those important skills each UA graduate must master to be part of this success.
