spacer image
The Associated Student Government invites all students to attend the next meeting of the House of Representatives Monday, October 13 and Tuesday, October 14, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre.

Because some student organization representatives indicate scheduling conflicts regarding Monday meetings, ASG House meetings are now scheduled on Tuesdays as well as Mondays. Other House of Representatives meetings scheduled for this academic year are:

All meetings will take place in the Student Union Theatre from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band Oct. 17
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

spacer image
spacer image
A New Orleans institution for over 40 years, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will leave its home in the French Quarter to perform on the stage of the renovated Akron Civic Theatre, which is managed by The University of Akron. The performance is slated for 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been touring the country and abroad for 25-plus years, while maintaining a rigorous performance schedule in the historic old hall from which they received their name. The musicians, ranging in age from 31 to 88, play to preserve the music that evolved in New Orleans around the turn of the 20th century, so that contemporary audiences might enjoy this uncommon incarnation of jazz.

Unlike the typical two-beat Dixieland style, this music is a shade slower in tempo than most jazz forms, and is characterized by distinct, horn-laden, rousing melodies. Unobscured by complicated arrangements, its greatness lies in its improvisation and a simplicity that perpetuates the legacy of New Orleans jazz. The sweet, playful and jubilant music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has thrilled millions in performances around the world. The band has been referred to by one music critic as "a bridge across the ages--a link between the present day and the heyday of traditional New Orleans music."

Tickets for the 8:00 p.m. October 17 performance of Preservation Hall Jazz Band are priced at $26 and $21, and may be purchased through the Akron Civic Theatre box office (330) 253-2488, E. J. Thomas Hall ticket office at (330) 972-7570, via Charge-By-Phone at (330) 945-9400 in Akron or (216) 241-5555 in Cleveland and online through Ticketmaster Centers.

For additional information, contact the Civic Theatre at (330) 535-3179 or online at http://www.akroncivic.com.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
