War, Peace, and Gender Roles: Separating Myth from Reality
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
War. Peace. Men. Women. What’s gender got to do with it? Find out spring semester 2008 by registering for “Gender Roles in Wartime and Peacetime.”

This three-credit Special Topics course in Women’s Studies will explore the myth that men are natural warriors and women natural peacemakers by investigating the cultural construction of gender roles during times of war and peace.

The course will also explore the fast disappearing division between battlefront and homefront as technology changes the way war is waged, as well as the demographic profile of its victims.

“Gender Roles in Wartime and Peacetime” will explore the cultural and economic effects of wars ranging from World War I to the War in Iraq by focusing on readings in the disciplines of history and literature. The course is available for both undergraduate and graduate credit.

This Special Topics Course in Women’s Studies will be held Wednesdays, 5:20-7:50 p.m. during spring semester 2008. Register for undergraduate class 17263, course 1840:485:802 or for graduate class 17264, course 1840:585:802.

What makes comedian Chris Fonseca laugh? Usually one word—legend. Twenty-one years into doing stand-up, many of his opening acts as well as some media types use the word in relation to Fonseca. The veteran comic smiles, then chuckles. “Legend? How do I keep my cape from getting caught in my wheelchair,” Fonseca deadpans. The wheelchair is part of the equation due to a combination of being born with Cerebral Palsy and car accidents. In fact, Chris allows his Cerebral Palsy to be the foundation of many of his stories. He notes that this helps to break down many preconceived barriers about CP. As a true comic legend, Chris has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, HBO’s Loco Slam, PBS’s Look Who’s Laughing, ABC’s American Comedy Awards, Comedy on the Road, Evening at the Improv, Entertainment Tonight, and Baywatch!

Innovative and classic, Rudy Currence is a powerful unique voice in today’s music scene. He sings with power and passion…writes beautiful, soulful lyrics…produces complex music…and plays several instruments including the keyboard and guitar. Rudy possesses an easy charm on and off stage. His musical background is very diverse, spanning genres including R&B, gospel, jazz and blues, folk, pop, and classical. His style has been called a mix of the soul-stirring classics like Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway and Marvin Gaye with the modern edginess of artists like India Arie, Avril Lavigne, and Alicia Keyes. He even had a song included on the soundtrack for the Tom Cruise film “Minority Report.” Rudy Currence will one day leave a musical legacy for generations to come.

Longtime curator and gallery director Bill Busta will present a lecture titled "Decisions" on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007 , at Noon in the Folk Hall auditorium of the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. Busta opened a new gallery in April 2007 at 2731 Prospect Ave in Cleveland.

The lecture, part of a continuing series in conjunction with the exhibition at the Emily Davis Gallery "All the Difference-Works in Clay", looks at the ways in which artists make career decisions and the effects of those choices.

Nearly twenty years ago Busta opened the original William Busta Gallery in Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood where he showcased many of Northeast Ohio's best artists. After shutting down his gallery in March 1998, Busta continued to be an important regional curator and helped both found and run the Heights Arts Gallery.

The lecture is free and open to the public. "All the Difference" features more than 400 pieces of ceramic art, and is on display through December 2, 2007.
