UA Western Equestrian Team to host horse show Nov. 18
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA's Western Equestrian Team will host an intercollegiate horse show on Sunday, November 18 at Walsh Farms at 18165 Grill Rd., Doylestown, Ohio. The show will start around 9 am and last until about 3:30.

"I am very excited about our Western Equestrian Team this year," said Melinda White, the team's adviser. "We have some riders that are first in their divisions in the country. We will be competing against Ohio State, OU, Lake Erie College, the College of Wooster, Kent, Oberlin, just to name many of the other schools."

Riders do not take their own horses to the horse show. Most of the riders do not own their own horses, they just take riding lessons from their Team Coach. The school that sponsors the event, also provides the horses that will be shown, and the riders draw lots to see which horse they will ride in their class(s). Each rider competes in a class called horsemanship/ Equitation, in which the rider is judged on how well they handle the horse at a walk, trot, and canter, going in both directions, and their posture or form, during their class.

The team is always looking for new members. We also have an English Equestrian Team, that ride at Stoney Ridge Stables, in Wadsworth, Ohio. Our English coach is Laura Hearty. Our English Team also shows in horsemanship classes, and if a rider is at the Intermediate level or above, they can also show in a class known as Equitation over Fences, in which they jump their horse over a course of different jumps.

COME OUT AND SUPPORT OUR TEAM. If you have any questions about the show, or about our teams, please call the team adviser, Melinda White, at 330-495-8737 for more information. Hope to see you there!

Filmmaker from Akron to discuss work-In-progress Nov. 20

spacer image
spacer image
Avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, who has voluntarily lived in a Japanese mental institution for the past 30 years yet is considered by many to be Japan’s greatest living artist, is the subject of a lecture presentation by Akron native and documentary film maker Heather Lenz on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 6 p.m., at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. During the lecture, Lenz will present her documentary work-in-progress "Kusama: Princess of Polka Dots". The program is free and open to the public with a reception following.,

The documentary is the marriage of Lenz’s interests in documentary film, art history and fine arts. She plans to complete the work by 2009 to coincide with the Yayoi Kusama retrospective being organized by the American Federation of the Arts. Lenz is at the UA Myers School of Art this week as part of the school’s artist in residence program. She became interested in the avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama in 1994, and began developing her remarkable life story into a script in 2001.

Yayoi’s nickname “Polka Dot Princess” came from the press and paparazzi, due to the dots frequently seen in her work. Kusama herself attributed the dots to hallucinations which began during her childhood, and were symptomatic of her mental illness.

Heather Lenz made her first experimental and nonfiction films in 1991 on super 8 and 16mm while earning her BA in art history and her BFA in sculpture from Kent. Lenz moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to begin work on her MFA in film production at the University of Southern California School of Cinema and Television, where she continues to work in the field.
