The Counseling, Testing and Career Center is offering groups to reduce stress and improve the academic performance of busy college students. A stress managment group meets weekly where participants use techniques such as meditation, progressive relaxation and biofeedback to relax.

Groups are also available to improve relationships, support women of color and help graduate students complete their thesis or dissertation.

Alcohol Awareness Week Oct. 20

To kick off National Alcohol Awareness Week, the members of Bacchus & Gamma peer education group will be providing an information table on the first floor of the Student Union Monday, October 20, from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Students will be able to pick up information and try out "drinking goggles" to show the effects of alcohol consumption.

The "Not This Week Campaign" will consist of a short pledge that students can sign to not drink for the week and then receive a button that reads "Not This Week" to show their choice. Students signing the pledge will be entered into a drawing for various gift certificates.

There is still time to get help for less-than-perfect mid-term grades. Students can learn to "study smart" with the Focus on Success series of four consecutive Monday evening study skills workshops, October 20 through November 10, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Carroll Hall, Room 158.

The four workshops will cover Textbook Reading and Comprehension, Memory Management, Test Taking Strategies and Critical Thinking. All workshops are taught from an adult learning style perspective and students are encouraged to attend all four.

There is a $25 materials fee for a comprehensive packet which covers all four evenings.

October 27 - Graduate (0-11.99 hours earned); Law (D2 & E3); Undergraduate (96-127.99 hours earned); and C&T students (32+ hours earned towards Associates degree).

October 29 - Law (D1 & E2); and Undergraduate (80-95.99 hours earned).

October 31 - Law (E1); and Undergraduate (64-79.99 hours earned).

November 3 - Undergraduate (52-63.99 hours earned).

November 5 - Undergraduate (42-51.99 hours earned).

November 7 - Undergraduate (32-41.99 hours earned).

November 10 - Undergraduate (21-31.99 hours earned).

November 12 - Undergraduate (11-20.99 hours earned).

November 14 - Undergraduate (1-10.99 hours earned).

The Northeastern Ohio Flute Association will be hosting its fourteenth annual Flute Festival Saturday,
October 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in Guzzetta Hall at The University of Akron.

This year's guest artist is internationally recognized alto and bass flute expert Christine Potter.

The day's events will include masterclasses with Christine Potter and George Pope, flute choir reading sessions, recitals, instrument exhibits and the High School Young Artist Competition.

Cost for the festival is $12 with pre-registration and $15 the day of the event. UA students and faculty enter free with valid ID.

"Investing 101' Oct. 25

The Financial Management Association is sponsoring a free seminar on how to develop an investment plan Saturday, October 25, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the College of Business Administration, Room 120. This seminar is open to all students, faculty, staff and guests.

The seminar will be presented by Tom Costigan, an instructor in the Department of Finance and a Registered Representative with clients all over the country.

The seminar will address such issues as how to get started in investing, which funds to choose and how many of each, how to diversify funds, asset allocating and dollar cost averaging.

These and other "investing concepts" are covered in an easy-to-learn format for all new investors with a concentration on mutual funds and fund families.

Seating is limited due to room size, so those interested in attending are encouraged to sign up early to reserve a seat and a copy of all handout material.

The mission of The University of Akron Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program is to promote excellence in the academic endeavors of low-income, first-generation, college students and students from traditionally underrepresented groups in education. The purpose of the program is to provide enriching scholastic experiences that prepare eligible scholars for doctoral education.

Program benefits include academic year activities, GRE preparation workshops and a summer research opportunity with a faculty mentor. Scholars can also receive a stipend of up to $2,800 for program participation.

The McNair Scholars Program is offered on a competitive basis. To qualify, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

*Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
*Have at least a sophomore standing with a declared major.
*Have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA.
*Be a low-income, first-generation college student and/or a member of a group traditionally under-represented in graduate education.

Application Process

Step 1: Contact the McNair Scholars Program at (330) 972-2134 to request a Prospective Student Card. Submit the Prospective Student Card to the McNair Scholars Program at the below address.

Step 2: If eligible for the McNair Scholars Program, an application will be provided based on the Prospective Student Card.

Step 3: Submit by October 30, 2003:

1. The Application Form.
2. Two letter of recommendation forms from faculty members.
3. Official transcript, resume and current class schedule
4. An essay, as directed in Section V of the application form.

Step 4: Finalists will be interviewed by the beginning of November 2003.

Step 5: McNair Scholars will be notified by the end of November 2003.
