From UA police: Things to keep in mind at the end of the semester
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA's police officers offer the following suggestions to you as you prepare for the end of the semester.

"If students follow these tips, the number of incidents we see would decrease," said UA Police Chief Paul Callahan.

  • Do not load your vehicle the night before you leave for home on break. It only takes a minute to break out a window and steal the items.
  • Lock your doors and windows when leaving your living quarters, no matter how long or short the time span. Many times a burglar enters a residence through an unlocked door or window. If practical, leave on a stereo or TV and a light when you leave.
  • Do not leave money or valuables in plain view in your home or car. With your car, take the time to secure your valuables in the trunk.
  • Engrave a security number on all valuables (including marking textbooks). Engravers can be borrowed from the University of Akron Police Department. Inventory these items, too. Make sure that you have the make, model and serial number of each item written down and kept in a safe place.
  • Criminals look for easy opportunities such as stealing books to be exchanged for cash at local bookstores.
  • Report suspicious activity to the police. The concept of crime prevention invites all segments of the community to actively participate in the reduction of crime.

General safety tips for when you are on or near campus:

  • Walk with a friend whenever possible.
  • If you are alone, call Campus Patrol for an escort (330-972-7263).
  • When possible, travel in well-lit areas. Avoid dark streets, high shrubbery, shortcuts and dark doorways. If you feel a particular area on campus looks or feels unsafe, report it to the UA Police Department at 330-972-7123. If an area feels unsafe or needs attention off campus, call the Akron Police Department at 330-375-2181.
  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency phones on campus, many of which are topped with a blue light. There are more than 230 emergency phones on campus, each of which connects directly to a police dispatcher. Campus maps are available at the UA Police Department.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the police.

Important phone numbers (consider programming them into your cell phone):

University of Akron Police Department

  • Emergency, police, fire, injury: 9-1-1
  • Emergency 330-972-7123

In mascot contest, Zippy is facing a tough opponent this week
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Now it's getting serious. The regular season of the Capital One Mascot Challenge ended two weeks ago with Zippy atop the pack with a glowing 11-0 record.

Now the playoffs have begun, the regular season records are set aside, and the mascots must win or go home. Zippy's first payoff opponent is Otto from Syracuse University.

The contest is tight so far. Every vote counts. Help keep Zippy's run alive by voting daily at http://www.capitalonebowl.com/Voting/Default.aspx.

Springboard! is here
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Students can now access Springboard! - the new learning management system at UA. Springboard! is replacing WebCT in Spring 2008. Each class section offered in Spring 2008 has a course site in Springboard!. All course sites are ‘inactive’ so instructors will be able to work on their online course elements before students have access to the class. It will be necessary for your instructor to make their course site ‘active’ to you when the semester begins.

A special interest classroom, “All Students” has been created within Springboard! that will be visible to all students once you authenticate with a valid UANet ID and password. This is your opportunity to explore the environment and try different features.

Springboard! Quick Start Training for Students will be available the first two weeks of class.

Video Tutorials are available in Atomic Learning. Search for tutorials on "Desire2Learn". Note: Springboard! is our branded version of Desire2Learn.

UA to test new safety-alert e-mail tool on Monday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University continues to enhance its emergency communications tools. On Monday, we will test an improved safety-alert e-mail tool. A test e-mail message will be sent to you Monday afternoon. As the test is conducted, technicians in our Information Technology Services department will monitor its distribution to campus. You do not need to do anything.

Starting on Tuesday, we will no longer use Zipmail to distribute safety alerts to campus. Instead, safety alerts will appear in your mailbox as a Safety Alert, and the subject line will state the nature of the matter. The message will provide details and instructions.

The new tool will allow messages to be created and disseminated more quickly. Safety alerts will be sent only when a situation arises that poses a safety risk to students, faculty and staff.

If you have any questions or concerns, write to safetyalert@uakron.edu.

The Paralegal Student Association volunteered at the Haven of Rest on November 17. Along with the Haven of Rest, we would like to express a sincere thank you to the PSA Membership, University of Akron Faculty, Student Service Organizations, The Source, and University of Akron students who volunteered their time and/or donated canned goods.

We were able to donate four to five huge boxes of food to the Haven which were greatly appreciated before Thanksgiving. The Haven of Rest relayed information to us that they are in need of new sock and underwear donations most of all. Please keep them in mind in the future, as they rely on donations to survive. Thank you again for keeping the spirit of the holidays alive by donating.

The PSA committee would like to extend a wish to you and yours for a very warm and happy holiday season.

Respectively yours,
Suzanne Deeds, Jennifer Mazzei, Megan Byrd, Dawn Greathouse

UA Theatre Program presents 'Medea' tonight and tomorrow
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron Theatre Program presents Medea, directed by UA senior Shellie A. Smith. Performances are Dec. 7-8 at 8 p.m. in Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, 157 University Ave., on The University of Akron campus.

Euripides’ Medea is based on an ancient Greek myth. It may be the original tale of a woman scorned. Having betrayed her father and her country for her love of Jason, Medea herself, is abandoned. In a passion of rage she takes bloody revenge on her husband through their children. As Euripides said almost 2,500 years ago, “There is no bitterness to be compared with that between two people who once loved.”

Tickets are $5 and are available at the door one hour before each performance. For information, call 330-972-7895.

Heard of People to People? Why not try Teacher to Teacher? Get to
know more about the French culture by hosting a French teacher-in-training.

The Franco-American Teachers-in-Training Institute would like to announce an opportunity for hosting Fulbright scholars from France in Winter-Spring 2008. The program is an international exchange for teachers-in-training with the goal of providing participants with a better understanding of U. S. society, history and institutions through a university seminar and a teaching internship in Akron-area schools.

The Institute is looking for homestay hosts from January 27 to March 29, 2008 (or half of the time) for the portion of the French participants' stay when they will teach in local schools. There will be a small stipend to assist host families with logistic expenses.

If you are interested in hosting or if you have any referrals of others who may be interested, please contact Ms. Michelle Wilson at wilsonaif@earthlink.net or Dr. Susan Colville-Hall at colvillehall@uakron.edu.
