The Office of Student Development is offering Student Organization Budget Request Workshops for anyone interested in the budget request process for student organizations.

The workshop will be held on the third floor of Ayer Hall, Trustees Room II, at the following times:

• Monday, November 10, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, November 12, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
• Thursday, November 13, 7:00- 8:00 p.m.
• Monday, November 17, 10 – 11:00 a.m.

This workshop will cover the entire process of requesting Extracurricular Activities Funds (EAF) for registered student organizations. Students, faculty and staff involved in student organizations, now or in the future, are encouraged to participate.

The Associated Student Government invites all students to attend the next meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, November 10, or Tuesday, November 11, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre.

These meetings give students a chance to share ideas and success stories; stay informed on current university policies, projects and initiatives; network, co-sponsor and promote group events and discuss challenges and concerns with other student leaders and/or faculty members and administrators.

Other House of Representatives meetings scheduled for this academic year are February 9 or 10 and April 5 or 6, 2004, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre.

Failure of undergraduate student organizations to participate in at least half of the scheduled House of Representatives meetings will result in a 5% reduction of the organization's EAF funding for the following academic year.

The Student Dietetic Association will be sponsoring a fundraiser Tuesday, November 11 from 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Student Union.

Gourmet products such as instant no-bake cheesecakes, gourmet spice mix dip blends, gourmet coffees and teas and barbecue rubs will be available for $3.50 each or 3 for $10.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to stock up for the holidays and finals week.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help to support the Student Dietetic Association scholarship fund.

Join UA athletics head coaches and student athletes at the Spaghetti Warehouse, 510 S. Main St. in downtown Akron, on Tuesday, November 11, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. for ZIPSlive.

The first 50 UA students who present their ZIPcard will receive a FREE appetizer buffet, beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will also be drawings for door prizes, free 32 oz. ZIPS logo cups and other giveaways for all students in attendance.

Students can also register to be a part of the 2003-04 Zips Crew student spirit group at this event.

ZIPcards are accepted at the Spaghetti Warehouse, so students are encouraged to come on down and help ZIPS Athletics kick off the 2003 basketball season in style.

Troy Thirdgill Show Nov. 11

The Residence Hall Program Board and Residence Hall Council have teamed up to bring comedian Troy Thirdgill to campus Tuesday, November 11, from 9:09-10:30 p.m. in Bulger Down Under.

Troy Thirdgill's career took off like lightning when he won the Young Comedian's Laugh-Off in his home state of Oregon. He has been featured on BET's "Comic View," NBC's "In the House," "Martin," "In Living Color" and A&E's "An Evening at the Improv." He has also performed for troops overseas in such places as Australia, Eygpt, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Japan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. Troy's high energy and insightful take on life continue to make him one of the country's hottest headliners in colleges, comedy clubs and television shows.

"USA in Africa" Nov. 12

The Office of Multicultural Development will be hosting a panel discussion entitled "USA in Africa" on November 12, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Student Union, Ballroom E. This will be the second of four such discussions.

"USA in Africa" will engage participants in an informed discussion regarding the impact of the United States' involvement in Africa (culturally, economically, politically and otherwise) and strategies for constructive involvement.

Panelists will include: Dr. T. Modibo Ocran, School of Law; Dr. Emeka Ofobike, College of Business Administration; Debra Calhoun, American Friends Service Committee; Michele Wilson, American International Friends and Edwin Baylock, WATOES.

"Summer in Ghana" Nov. 12

The 2004 "Summer In Ghana" program, an educational tour of the country of Ghana in West Africa, is open to any student at The University of Akron and is tentatively scheduled from May 16-June 7, 2004. Participating students may receive academic credit for selected UA courses.

An informational meeting on next summer's program is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the College of Business Administration, Room 139. Details of the program and information on applicable financial aid will be discussed at this meeting.

The open enrollment deadline for Spring co-ops and internships is Monday, November 10, and the Summer priority deadline will be March 1, 2004.

Research has shown that students who complete a co-op or internship:
• Perform better in school.
• Are more likely to graduate.
• Are ahead of other students in their field who don’t co-op or participate in an internship.
• Are viewed as better candidates in job interviews by employers.
• Receive more job offers because of the academic preparation and professional work experience.

Final Zips Express Spirit Stop Nov. 15

The final Zips Express Spirit Stop will be leaving from the Student Union for the last football game of the season, Zips VS. Ohio, on Saturday, November 15. Kick off will be at 12:00 p.m.

The Zips Spirit Stop Shuttle runs every 45 minutes prior to the game, with one one return trip during the game and two return trips afterwards.

A variety of activities will be available while students wait for the shuttle, including a DJ, visits with Zippy and the UA Spirit team, free popcorn and cotton candy and pre-game festivities as students wait for shuttle (i.e. sign making, face painting, face tattoos, spirit ribbons, etc.)
