The English Language Institute (ELI), UA's English program for international students, invites UA students to participate in its Conversation Partners Program. Through this program, the ELI pairs an international student who is learning English in our program with an American partner for one hour of informal conversation per week. ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a wonderful opportunity to learn about another country and culture AND to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron.

Sign-up for the Spring 2008 Conversation Partners Program begins January 14 in the ELI Office in Olin Hall 302. The one-hour weekly meetings will run from mid-February until mid-April. Call (330) 972-7544 for more information.

The University of Akron will hold its annual Ice Fest ice carving competition and demonstrations on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Student Union.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed, weather-wise,” says event organizer and UA alumnus Aaron Costic, three-time ice carving national champion and two-time Winter Olympics medalist. “Ideal ice carving temperatures are 20 to 25 degrees; carving can obviously be done at warmer temperatures, but the sculptures have a shorter shelf life.”

The Ice Fest will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Student Union Plaza. Inside, students will carve chocolate and vegetables in the area outside Starbucks.

Students on the Hospitality Management department’s ice carving team will compete in ice carving and speed carving competitions, sharpening their skills for the Collegiate Ice Carving National Competition in Frankenmuth, Mich., Jan. 25-27.

Hospitality Management is part of Summit College, which offers traditional and academic programs that respond to changing community needs and market demands. Dedicated to workforce development and continuing education, it connects academics and career skills to offer certificates and associate and baccalaureate degrees in a number of disciplines.

How is your dining etiquette? Do you think you have what it takes to make a good first impression on a prospective employee? There is no better, or possibly worse, place to make an impression than the dinner table. Most of us can get through a meal with a friend without even thinking twice about it, but once you’re sitting with a potential employer, the pressure is on.

The Center for Career Management is offering a “crash course” highlighting the basic elements of a full-course meal. Dining tips will be facilitated by a consultant specializing in etiquette and interviewing, as you enjoy a lunch of soup, salad, your choice of entrée, and dessert. Reservations for this event must be made by Wednesday, January 31 through the Center for Career Management, Simmons 301. Seating is limited.

For more information and reservation details contact the Center for Career Management at 330-972-7747 or uaccm@uakron.edu. A $20 deposit (cash or Zip Card meal plan) is required when you register and will be refunded after you attend the event. Those who reserve a meal, but do not attend, will forfeit their $20.
