Revisiting Race: Black, White and Beyond
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron will explore race relations through a series of events Feb. 4-13.

Ten years ago, then President Clinton chose the University of Akron as the location for his first Town Hall Meeting on Race, in large part because of the innovative work being done by the Coming Together Project. Students, faculty and staff have planned a series of events to commemorate the president’s visit and continue our ongoing and pro-active work in understanding race relations (including racial and ethnic conflicts) in general, and also improve upon the racial climate on our campus. The schedule includes a wide array of events including keynote speakers, a theatrical production, Face2Face conversations, an online museum, a film festival, and Unity March.

“Our goal is to engage the entire campus in a meaningful dialog on race relations,” said Dr. Annabelle Foos, Associate Dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences.

Major events that are part of “Revisiting Race: Black, White and Beyond” include:
  • Paul Rusesabagina will present “Hotel Rwanda: A Lesson Yet To Be Learned” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the Student Union, Ballrooms A & B.
  • Dr. Joy DeGruy Leary, author of "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing," will speak from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5 in the Student Union Theatre.
  • John O’Neal will perform “Don’t Start Me to Talking or I’ll Tell You Everything I Know: Sayings from the Life and Writings of Junebug Jabbo Jones,” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 6, in Daum Theater, located in Kolbe Hall.
  • Dr. Manning Marable, author of the “Along the Color Line” column that appears in newspapers and journals worldwide, will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Goodyear Auditorium in the Goodyear Polymer Building.
  • Dr. Lolita McDavid, will present “Health Care through the Eyes of Urban Families and their Children” from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 in the Student Union theatre.

University to test emergency text-message service Feb. 4
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University will test its Z-Alert emergency text-messaging system on Monday, Feb. 4.

A simple test message will be sent to all subscribers of the service that morning. As the message is distributed, technicians will watch behind the scenes to make sure its goes out as expected.

Z-Alert messages are sent to subscribers when the campus closes or when a situation arises that poses an immediate threat to safety.

Here is how to subscribe:

  1. Go to ZipLine and log in with your UANet ID and password
  2. Click on the Z-Alert Text Messaging icon
  3. Follow the instructions from there

The University is not charging for the Z-Alert service; however, recipients will pay text-messaging fees as prescribed in their service agreements. Recipients may unsubscribe at any time via ZipLine.

UA's top financial officer explains latest bond rating
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Moody's Investor Services has affirmed the University's solid A2 credit rating as the University prepares to sell bonds to finance the second phase of the New Landscape for Learning initiative. UA's rating, classified by Moody's as “upper medium grade” with “low credit risk,” affects the University's interest rate on borrowed funds.

The A2 rating is a very positive reflection of the University's current financial position, according to Dr. John Case, UA's vice president for finance and administration/CFO. In its evaluation, Moody's cited the University's strong enrollment growth (up 10 percent since 2004), its growth in revenue and fund-raising, its total financial resources and its sustained positive operating performance.

In the same review, Moody's revised the University's outlook from “stable” to “negative.”

“The change in outlook merely reflects Moody's view that UA will need to raise revenue or lower expenses to cover the bond payments and any additional expenses incurred from operating the new buildings,” Case said. “We have a number of options available to us to achieve this. Once we show Moody's that we can balance our future budgets taking into account the new buildings, Moody's likely will revise the outlook to either 'stable' or 'positive.'”

Projects included in the second phase of the New Landscape for Learning initiative are the stadium, Quaker Square, a parking deck, a new building for the College of Education, a residence hall and assorted renovations, including the expansion of lab space for the College of Nursing and the improvements to Robertson Dining Hall (completed this summer).

spacer image
Start off your Lent on the right foot. Join us in Student Union Ballroom B for Mass. A simple dinner will follow at the Newman Center, by St. Bernard’s Church.

The following Wednesday we will be sponsoring a talk just in time for Valentine’s Day:

“Who is Man for Woman and who is Woman for Man?”
Why do many women like "chick flicks" and shopping while many men prefer barbecuing and watching football? The answer can be explained through Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body."

Come and hear a penetrating exploration into the archetypes and "hardwiring" of maleness and femaleness according to the Divine Order. Using the language of the "Theology of the Body," Fr. Thomas J Loya demonstrates how and why God created men and women with different yet complimentary physical, spiritual and intellectual characteristics. This insightful and entertaining presentation will prove to be a revelation for married couples and single adults alike.

Fr. Tom Loya is a Byzantine Catholic priest from the Chicago area and an international "Theology of the Body" speaker.
