City and University of Akron police announced today that a 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with two sexual assaults in recent months near campus, including one last Monday of a UA female student on Kling Street.

Christopher Edward Butts of Akron was arrested yesterday on two counts each of rape, aggravated burglary, felonious assault and kidnapping.

Separately, police also announced the Jan. 8 arrest of John Wayne St. Clair, 24, in connection with a string of burglaries. A plainclothes police officer spotted St. Clair running through a backyard on Lamparter Street with a laptop under his arm. Since his arrest, he has confessed to committing 22 burglaries in areas north and south of I-76, including close to UA.

“The arrests announced today will be welcome news for students, parents and all of us at the University,” said UA Police Chief Paul Callahan. “These cases have been our top priority, and I want to give credit to the Akron officers and detectives who worked diligently around the clock to bring about the arrests.”
