The Office of International Programs has organized the events of International Education Week. These events are sponsored by: Akron International Friendship, the Association of Global Student Organizations, Associated Student Government, the Chinese Student & Scholar Association, the Thai Students Association and the Turkish & American Student Association.

According to David Ayers, Director of the Office of International Programs, international education is no longer an option for an educated person. The world has become increasingly interrelated and complex. Foreign policy decisions can impact everyone directly and personally. The future depends upon whether society members are competent in international affairs, comfortable with cultural diversity and able to work cooperatively with others around the world. For this reason, the U.S. Departments of Education and State are teaming up to celebrate International Education Week November 15-21. Students are encouraged to take advantage of as many activities as their schedules allow.

Classical Studies Lecture Nov. 19

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The annual Theodore T. Duke Lecture will be held Wednesday, November 19, at 8:15 p.m. in the Folk Hall Auditorium. The lecture will be led by Tim McNiven, Ohio State University Department of Classics.

The ancient Greeks defined themselves by what they were not--animals or barbarians. And Greek men defined themselves by what they were not--women or children. Throughout the art of ancient Greece, the imagery of these "others" is displayed as a way to reinforce the superiority of being what they regarded as the greatest of the gods' creations, an adult Greek man. Through these portrayals, we can observe the constant negotiations it took to support such an ageist, sexist, ethnocentric view of the world.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
