Roo Express update: Quaker Square and Polsky lines combined, move more frequently
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Roo Express shuttle service kicked off just four weeks ago and has been well received by UA's students, faculty, and staff. In this time we've received some valuable feedback, which is helping us to improve this service. Here's how we're improving it:

  1. Starting Monday morning, the Quaker Square and Polsky Lines are going to be combined. Now two buses will run between Quaker Square, Polymer Circle, and the Polsky Building, so you won't have to switch buses between any of these destinations.
  2. The buses will depart more frequently. Instead of departing every 15 minutes, each bus will depart every 7 minutes. This means that there never will be more than a few minutes to wait before the bus proceeds to its next stop.

To download a printable copy of the new shuttle schedule (recommended), go to http://www.uakron.edu/aux/parking/docs/RooExpSched_020808.xls. Please keep sending us your feedback to rooexpress@uakron.edu.

Study and teach in France for 12-weeks during the Fall Semester of 2008!
The College of Education’s Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies is happy to announce we have received funding for a second year to offer an amazing opportunity to students studying to become educators.

The Franco-American Teachers-in-Training Institute is recruiting students for a 12-week internship in France during fall semester of 2008. All participants will receive free airfare, free housing, and a monthly living stipend.

Teachers-in-training will take part in a seminar series discussing French language, culture, and education, followed by placement in schools throughout France. This year’s participants went to Paris, Amien, Rouen, Poitiers, Orleans, Bordeaux, Montpelier, Strasburg, Nancy and Reims. It is a wonderful opportunity to examine best practices by teaching in your content area (in English) and learning in a new culture.

Qualified undergraduate and graduate students will be seeking licensure in middle level or secondary education, have passed their content Praxis II exams, and completed their educational coursework all prior to Fall 2008. The ability to speak French is not required, but having studied French for at least one semester or during high school is required. Enthusiasm for learning is a must! Applications are also being accepted from recent or upcoming graduates who wish to begin their graduate studies, and participate in a unique and exciting program.

The application deadline is February 22nd so act soon!!

The College of Nursing is sponsoring and evening with Keynote: Dr. Lolita McDavid, MD, MPA
Dr. McDavid will lecture on "Health Care through the Eyes of Urban Families and their Children."
Urban health is a regional and national concern for communities, universities, health care systems, businesses, and the people who reside in those areas. Facilitating access to health care is a challenge for health professionals and other disciplines as they provide services for urban families and children. Health professionals and other disciplines face serious challenges related to policy issues associated with educational and health care access as well as comfort in dealing with diversity. Importantly, families and children must cope with ever-present concerns surrounding urban safety and lifestyle factors that impact health.
Lolita McDavid, MD, MPA, FAAP is Medical Director at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH. Her focus is on families, children’s rights, and urban health. She is an Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. McDavid has broad experience dealing with societal issues that influence access to health care. She testified in March, 2007 to members of the U.S. House of Representatives (House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee) recommending the reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. She serves on many national and local committees, and is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors. Dr. McDavid also has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Urban Development.

God, Sex, & the Meaning of Life! Feb. 13
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
All are invited to an engaging presentation about God’s plan for our sexuality:

“Who is Man for Woman and who is Woman for Man?”
Why do many women like "chick flicks" and shopping while many men prefer barbecuing and watching football? The answer can be explained through Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body."

Come and hear a penetrating exploration into the archetypes and "hardwiring" of maleness and femaleness according to the Divine Order. Using the language of the "Theology of the Body," Fr. Thomas J Loya demonstrates how and why God created men and women with different yet complimentary physical, spiritual and intellectual characteristics. This insightful and entertaining presentation will prove to be a revelation for married couples and single adults alike.

Fr. Tom Loya is a Byzantine Catholic priest from the Chicago area and an international Theology of the Body speaker.
