Spring semester update from UA's Parking Services

Throughout the fall semester, Parking Services has worked diligently to increase the number of spaces available for students, faculty and staff. Today there are more spaces available than at the start of the fall term.

Summary of improvements:

  • About 500 new spaces are available at Quaker Square, which is about a 12-minute walk from the campus center. Parking Services has monitored the lot closely this week, and at all times there were at least 150 spaces available. The free Roo Express shuttle runs between Quaker Square and the Goodyear Polymer Building daily, making the lot convenient for all.
  • Fifty-five new spaces are available Urban League Building on Lincoln Street.
  • Seventy-five new spaces will be available starting Wednesday at the Wolf Ledges Professional Building at Wolf Ledges and Wheeler Street. This lot is near Folk Hall and the Exchange Street and Gallucci residence halls. Please park at the rear of the professional building, entering the lot off of Wheeler Street. Park only in the spaces that are marked “All Permit.”
  • Forty-three spaces are available at the Buchtel Field lot, also on Wheeler Street, one block south of campus.
  • This map shows the locations of the Urban League lot, the Wolf Ledges lot and the Buchtel Field lot.
  • Repairs have been completed at the Exchange Street deck and the Administrative Services Building deck, so all spaces in those decks are available.

As in the past, 1,000 fewer permits have been sold this spring semester in comparison to the fall semester. The decline occurs for various reasons; including the fact that many students graduate in December.

Parking Services monitors lot usage daily during the fall and spring semester. Through one week of classes this semester, the department has noticed that parking availability on the east side of campus has been good. Spaces have been available at all hours in the East Campus Parking Deck near Route 8 and in the parking lot east of The Chapel (Lot 45). These are excellent choices close to the campus center. See a map showing all the lots on campus.

And here is more good news: While most of the lot immediately south of the Student Recreation Center has closed for stadium construction, about 75 spaces have been retained, and 50 more spaces will become available later this semester.

Over the last four years, Parking Services has worked purposefully to improve parking on campus by creating new spaces and offering new services. In 2007, a committee of students, faculty and staff reviewed parking on campus and issued a series of recommendations. These recommendations will guide planning in the years ahead. Chief among the recommendations is the construction of a 1,600-space deck near the Exchange Street deck. Construction is expected to begin next fall, with completion set for 2009.

Please visit the department's Web site periodically for updates, and use this map for the best places to park at times throughout the day.
