The Summer 2008 Schedule of Classes are available for viewing online via ZipLine today. Registration will begin Feb. 22 at 6:00 pm. All students are encouraged to register early.

Tutorials showing how to use ZipLine to search and register for courses are available on the Software Training and Technological Services Web site.

Summer 2008 Registration Information

Registration for the Summer 2008 term will begin on Friday, February 22. The Summer term contains five sessions:

• 1st 5-week session (May 19 – June 21)
• 1st 8-week session (May 19 – July 12)
• 2nd 5-week session (June 23 – July 26)
• 2nd 8-week session (June 23 – August 16)
• 3rd 5-week session (July 14 – August 16)

Tutorials showing how to use ZipLine to search and register for courses are available on the Software Training and Technological Services Web site.

Each group’s registration will begin at 6:00 pm on the date designated. The summer registration schedule is as follows:



• February 22 – Graduate (12+ hours earned); Law (D3, E4, L1 & L2); Postbaccalaureate; Undergraduate (136+ hours earned) NEOUCOM; and Honors.
• February 25 – Graduate (0-11.99 hours earned); Law (D2 & E3); and Undergraduate (116-135.99 hours earned).
• February 27 – Law (D1 & E2); Undergraduate (96-115.99 hours earned); and Summit College students (32+ hours earned towards Associates degree).
• February 29 – Law (E1) and Undergraduate (80-95.99 hours earned).
• March 3 – Undergraduate (64-79.99 hours earned).
• March 5 – Undergraduate (51-63.99 hours earned).
• March 7 – Undergraduate (41-50.99 hours earned).
• March 10 – Undergraduate (32-40.99 hours earned).

ASG Positions for Judicial Branch

Associated Student Government (ASG) is looking for highly motivated and dedicated students who want to improve The University of Akron. Currently, we have positions open in the Judicial Branch.

Duties include:
-Handling parking appeals
-Interpreting and enforcing the ASG Constitution and Bylaws
-Holding one office hour and attending a weekly meeting (Friday’s 2:00pm-4:00pm)

Qualifications: 2.3 GPA, taking at least 12 credit hours per semester, and in good standing with the University.

If interested, all candidates must complete the following:

-Fill out an online application (email cmi3@uakron.edu if interested)
-Submit a current resume of qualifications
-Submit a cover letter of intent

Study and teach in France for 12-weeks during the Fall Semester of 2008!

The College of Education’s Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies is happy to announce we have received funding for a second year to offer an amazing opportunity to students studying to become educators.

The Franco-American Teachers-in-Training Institute is recruiting students for a 12-week internship in France during fall semester of 2008. All participants will receive free airfare, free housing, and a monthly living stipend.

Teachers-in-training will take part in a seminar series discussing French language, culture, and education, followed by placement in schools throughout France. This year’s participants went to Paris, Amien, Rouen, Poitiers, Orleans, Bordeaux, Montpelier, Strasburg, Nancy and Reims. It is a wonderful opportunity to examine best practices by teaching in your content area (in English) and learning in a new culture.

Qualified undergraduate and graduate students will be seeking licensure in middle level or secondary education, have passed their content Praxis II exams, and completed their educational coursework all prior to Fall 2008. The ability to speak French is not required, but having studied French for at least one semester or during high school is required. Enthusiasm for learning is a must!

Applications are also being accepted from recent or upcoming graduates who wish to begin their graduate studies, and participate in a unique and exciting program.

The application deadline is February 28nd so act soon!!

Join us for V-Day 2008! The Women’s Studies Program at the University of Akron will present Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues February 15 and 16 at Folk Hall Theater. University students and staff, along with local community talent, make up the dynamic cast for this years 10th anniversary V-Day celebration performance. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties.

V-Day events are scheduled to open at 6:00pm with local all-female country band, The Rhondas, with the Monologues following at 7:00pm. Festivities also include a V-day centered art exhibit showcasing work from area artists, tasty treats bake sale and raffle. The Clothesline Project, featuring T-shirts made by local area survivors, will be on display throughout both evenings. Advance tickets for the Vagina Monologues can be purchased through the Women’s Studies Program office, located in Shrank Hall North room 58, Monday through Friday, 11:00am-5:00pm or by calling 330-972-7008. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for students.

Do you have children that are ready for the swimming pool or that need to learn and fine tune the fundamental swim strokes? Are you interested in conquering a fear of the water or learning how to use swimming as a form of exercise? The Student Recreation & Wellness Center is continuing Spring Swimming Lessons for 2008 on Saturday mornings starting February 23 and Tuesday/Thursday evenings starting February 26. We have experienced American Red Cross Swimming Instructors that are ready to teach participants of all ages and skill levels! We have Parent/Tot Classes, Preschool Swimming, Adult Classes and our traditional Levels 1-6 Youth Swim Classes. Tobacco: Ohio Quits! *
How to help your patients and clients quit tobacco use

Monday, Feb. 25th, 2008 12-1 P.M.
in the Student Union Gardner Theatre

Purpose: To increase knowledge of tobacco use as a component of the Chronic Disease Model and brief methods for successful intervention

Audience: Health and allied health professionals including nurses (RN°¶s and LPN°¶s), nurse practitioners, physicians, residents, interns, medical students, dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, medical assistants, physician assistants, dietitians, social workers, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, hospital personnel, health department personnel, health clinic personnel, community social service agency staff members, human resources managers and other interested professionals, anyone in the community.

Method: PowerPoint lecture and discussion, reference manual and resources

Length: 1 hour** for award of contact hour

Objectives:
ƒ‹Identify the importance of assessing tobacco use in patients/clients
ƒ‹Identify the steps of a brief tobacco use intervention
ƒ‹Recognize the appropriate use of provider resources

Topics:
ƒ‹Explore impact of tobacco use in Ohio and opportunities for healthcare providers
ƒ‹Encourage healthcare providers to include patient°¶s tobacco use as a °ßvital sign°®
ƒ‹Briefly review reasons providers do not address tobacco use and the steps to a brief successful intervention
ƒ‹Inform providers of FREE tobacco cessation programs*
ƒ‹Introduce providers to methods of referring patients and clients to free cessation programs*
ƒ‹Review cessation pharmacotherapies and forms of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) available (some at no cost or low-cost to patients/clients)
ƒ‹Provide information and free resources for providers and patients/clients

Cost: No cost (presentation, resources and cessation programs are free)

Continuing Education: **This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center°¶s Commission on Accreditation. ONA Assigned #13,449. Approval valid through August 31, 2009.

This hands on Outdoor Adventure Seminar will teach you how to build a light weight alcohol stove. This stove is the popular choice of long distance hikers. All materials will be provided and you will leave with your own handmade stove.

Up 'til Dawn will be holding its annual Finale Event on February 29th from 10 pm to 6 am in the Student Union Ballroom. This Finale Event marks the cap of the second year program, in which all participants are encouraged to join in to celebrate their accomplishments for the children. In remembrance of the children and families who have struggled with childhood cancer and who have endured many sleepless nights. Free food, games, and coffee will be provided throughout the night!

As an organization we are so proud of the student body and their ability to come together in order to raise awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

An intensive one-week, entrepreneurship immersion experience for 35 select undergraduates from seven Northeast Ohio four year colleges and universities (5 students from Akron , Ashland , Kent State, Cleveland State , Case, Baldwin Wallace, and John Carroll University ). Students will learn how to create a business, market it, obtain finances and present their plan to investors. The learning experience will involve actual entrepreneurs combined with leading experts in the field of entrepreneurship.

Where: John Carroll University. Students will live on campus for the week.

When: 2nd or 3rd week in August, 2008

Why: Northeast Ohio is in need of an infusion of young entrepreneurs, who will remain in the area after graduation and who wish to form new enterprises, create jobs for the labor force, and generate new economic activity

Who: Five students from each school will return to their home institutions, ready to start the academic year with new knowledge, new skills, and new attitudes about entrepreneurial opportunities here in Northeast Ohio.

Who is Eligible: Any student at The University of Akron who is going to be a Junior or Senior next academic year.
