Have you downloaded UA's new student-success app?
Successful U app video

The free app, designed by students for students, is designed to help you succeed in and out of the classroom.

You can tailor it to your self-identified interests and needs. When you first download and open the app, it asks about your interests in six areas:

  • academics and career,
  • financial awareness,
  • leadership and volunteerism,
  • personal growth and wellness,
  • health and fitness, and
  • personal relationships.

From there, you can set goals, learn about related campus programs and services, and be inspired by alumni and civic leaders. The app is designed to “push information” to you. For example, if you are interested in outdoor adventure, you will learn about the opportunity to rent camping equipment from the recreation center. If you want information to improve your fitness, you can browse for diet and workout tips.

Philosophy: Ethics, and DeterminismApril 22
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
“A World on Autopilot?: Atheism, Evolution, Ethics, and Determinism”

August Berkshire will discuss the ramifications of a natural, deterministic universe without gods or free will, in which evolution shapes our ethics and actions. Is life worth living? How do we derive meaning and purpose in our lives? Can we avoid fatalism? What does this say about ethics, cooperation, altruism, praise, blame, responsibility, crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and revenge? Should we be optimistic or pessimistic abou...t the future?

August Berkshire is a past president of Minnesota Atheists, a past vice president of Atheist Alliance International, and on the speakers bureau for the national Secular Student Alliance. He has been an atheist activist since 1984 and is the author of numerous pamphlets. He is the owner of the ATHEIST license plate for Minnesota and is proud to be listed in the reference book “Who’s Who in Hell.”

Following the event we will have a special communion of reason at The Lockview with August Berkshire.
