Jim Tressel is the 5th leadership speaker in the UA Leads series!

In May 2012, James P. (Jim) Tressel returned to his alma mater in a role where he worked to identify, recommend and support strategies and efforts that promote success in all facets of student life. In December 2013, he was appointed executive vice president for student success.

Tressel is responsible for laying the foundation for a successful Akron Experience for every University of Akron student — relying on all departments of the campus — including recruitment, admissions, advising, marketing, financial advising, technology and others.

He earned a B.A. in Education at Baldwin Wallace College in 1975, and a master's degree in education in 1977 at UA, where he also served as assistant football coach and instructor of physical education from 1975 to 1978. His experience in coaching continued through 2010 on the campuses of Miami University of Ohio, Syracuse University, Youngstown State University and The Ohio State University. Tressel has published two books: "The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life" (2008) and "Life Promises for Success" (2011).

UA Leads is the NACA Regional Program of the Year: a series of fun, interactive events designed to enhance and develop leadership skills. Even better, these events are free to attend for all University of Akron students! Students who attend five to six programs and answer survey questions regarding those five to six programs will be recognized with the Silver Leadership Award. Students who attend seven to eight programs and answer survey questions regarding those seven to eight programs will be recognized with the Gold Leadership Award. Students will be recognized for their commitment to developing themselves as leaders with one of these LIFE Awards on April 16.

Employers will be seeking students for summer internships, co-ops, and full- and part-time employment.

All aerospace systems, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, corrosion, electrical, and mechanical engineering students are encouraged to attend, as well as students in computer science, applied math, statistics, chemistry, physics, polymer engineering, engineering technology (automated manufacturing, construction, electronic, mechanical, surveying and mapping, computer information systems), and information systems management fields.

In the turbulent years between 1990 and 1994 Nelson Mandela's leadership held steadfast despite the challenges posed in dismantling the residual effects of Apartheid and pushing for a unified South Africa. The two-time Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir is heralded as one of the most exciting groups to emerge in world music in recent years performing at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s 75th birthday.

Under the direction of choirmaster David Mulovhedzi, the choir draws on the best talent from the many churches and communities in and around Soweto, South Africa. Students should e-mail APPROPRIATE photos of their tattoo to zpnfinearts@uakron.edu. The top 10 tattoos will be chosen and scheduled for a professional photo. The professional photo will then be displayed in the Student Union in the second floor lounge for all students to see. Students will then vote on their favorite and the winner will receive a gift card!
