About Us

Founded in 1979, the English Language Institute (ELI) offers high-quality instruction in English as a second language (ESL).

The ELI has helped numerous people from countries across the globe expand their career options, improve their academic studies, and enrich their personal lives. ELI students not only become proficient and confident users of English but also gain practical insight into living in the United States.

English for Academic Purposes Program

If you are a citizen of another country, a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident and are looking for an intensive language learning experience, our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program is for you. Designed for people who plan to earn a university degree in the United States, this program focuses on the English skills required for success in university coursework.

Full-time students in the EAP program study for 20 hours a week in daytime noncredit courses that address four areas of English: reading, writing, listening comprehension, and grammar/speaking. Applicants from other countries will be issued SEVIS I-20 travel documents so that they can get an F-1 student visa for entry to the U.S.

Conversation Partners Program

The English Language Institute (ELI), the University’s English program for international students, invites American students, faculty, and staff to participate in its Conversation Partners Program.

Through this program, the ELI pairs an international student who is learning English as a second language with an American partner for weekly informal conversation meetings in English. It gives American participants the chance to learn about another country and culture AND to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron.
