Exploring the critical issues
impacting Black males in higher education

Welcome --

The University of Akron is gearing up for its sixth annual Black Male Summit, April 12 and 13, 2013, and this year’s gathering promises to be better than ever!

Last year’s Black Male Summit was able to attract close to 1,000 registrants from across the country, drawing highly-acclaimed experts from higher education institutions, public school systems, private foundations, religious organizations, and the business community.  The Conference is open to all, but is geared toward the needs of the Black Male Community and will address a broad spectrum of topics ranging from networking, race relations, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and strategies for personal and professional growth. All are encouraged to attend.

This year we have taken a new approach to improve student success by focusing on establishing an early pipeline into high schools.  Working with the Akron Public Schools and its Superintendent David James, two hundred 9th, 10th and 11th grade students have been identified with GPA’s of 2.5 or better, with good attendance, and are being personally invited to this year’s Summit.  Buses have been chartered to transport the students.

Our admissions personnel through our Vice President of Strategic Engagement, Jim Tressel, will maintain ongoing contact with this group of students until their high school graduation and hopefully their enrollment here at the UA.

We hope you will be able to join us on the campus of The University of Akron to hear nationally renowned speakers, educational leaders, practitioners, and students explore the critical issues affecting Black males in higher education.
