Biography

Elizabeth Shaver is an Assistant Professor of Legal Writing at The University of Akron School of Law.  In addition to teaching legal writing to first-year law students, Professor Shaver also teaches an upper level litigation drafting course and a course in Special Education Law.  Before joining Akron Law in 2009, Professor Shaver worked as a senior attorney with Genesis Professional Liability Managers, a Berkshire-Hathaway Company.  At Genesis, Professor Shaver performed a variety of claims handling and underwriting functions with regard to the directors' and officers' liability insurance policies issued by Genesis to publicly traded companies.  Before joining Genesis, Professor Shaver spent five years in the general litigation department of Jones Day.  Professor Shaver also served for two years as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Alexander Harvey II of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Professor Shaver received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Vanderbilt University and J.D., cum laude, from Cornell Law School, where she was a member of the Cornell Law Review.  She has a published note in the Cornell Law Review entitled "Do Not Resuscitate:  The Failure to Protect the Incompetent Patient's Right of Self-Determination."  Professor Shaver is a member of the Board of Directors for the Ardmore Foundation, an Akron, Ohio nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life of adults and children with developmental delays and other disabilities.
