ARAB 101 - Beginning Arabic I

4.00 credits
This is the first semester of a two-semester course designed to give students a strong foundation at the elementary level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to Modern Standard Arabic. (With some exposure to the Egyptian dialect). There will be an emphasis on active vocabulary learning, developing the ability to use the language to accomplish basic communicative tasks. As well as learning and developing strategies for successful long term second language learning. Authentic materials are used throughout the course. The materials are based on a video narrative about two main characters and their extended families, which provides exposure to culturally contextualized language use.  

ARAB 102 - Beginning Arabic II

4.00 credits
This is the second semester of a two-semester course designed to give students a strong foundation at the elementary level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to Modern Standard Arabic. ARAB 201 - Intermediate Arabic I

4.00 credits

This course is designed to further the student’s knowledge and proficiency in the Arabic language. Students will learn to speak about personal experiences and various environments, initiate and sustain conversations as well as narrate in various topics. In addition, students will comprehend and produce basic words and expressions in colloquial Arabic and carry out written transactions connected to daily life. Throughout the duration of this course, one will become more familiar with aspects of Arab culture such as social and religious customs, traditions, family life and education.

ARAB 202 - Intermediate Arabic II

4.00 credits
This course is designed to further the student’s knowledge and proficiency in the Arabic language. ARAB 210 - Arabic Culture Through Film

3.00 credits
This course introduces students to key topics of Arabic culture and broadens their cultural horizons by viewing cinematic depictions from the Arabic countries. Students will gain insights into the Arabs way of life, and at the same time, develop a cross-cultural perspective on the many similarities and differences between Arabic and American cultures. 

Students will learn about the political, social, gender cultural and religious diversity in the Arab World by examining a select number of authentic Arabic movies from the Arab world, discussing cultural contexts in which they emerged and the issues they deal with. 

Films subtitled in English. Readings and discussions in English.
Prerequisites: 32 credit hours including English Composition I and II (ENGL 111 & ENGL 112)
