JAPN 101 - BEGINNING JAPANESE I 

4.00 credits
Beginning Japanese I is a course introducing the fundamentals of Japanese grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and usage in social and cultural context. This course will also introduce students to written Japanese. Students will learn Japanese syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and 43 Chinese characters (kanji). Students will acquire basic knowledge of the Japanese people and culture.  The course will focus on developing the student’s four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in modern Japanese with an emphasis on grammatical accuracy, fluency, and socially appropriate language use.

JAPN 102 - BEGINNING JAPANESE II

4.00 credits
Beginning Japanese II continues to introduce the fundamentals of Japanese grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and usage in social and cultural context. This course will also introduce students to written Japanese. Students will learn Japanese syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and 72 additional characters (kanji). Students will acquire basic knowledge of the Japanese people and culture.  The course will focus on developing the student’s four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in modern Japanese with an emphasis on grammatical accuracy, fluency, and socially appropriate language use.
Pre-requisites: JAPN 101 or equivalent.

JAPN 201 - INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE I

3.00 credits
This course is a continuation of Elementary Japanese II. It offers further development of proficiency in modern Japanese at the intermediate level. Students will learn to to master basic vocabulary and be able to use intermediate grammatical forms. Using the grammatical knowledge, they have learned, students will conduct simple everyday conversations. Students will also read specially prepared material written in kanji, hiragana, and katakana with the help of vocabulary lists or a dictionary and write their own short paragraphs on familiar topics using hiragana, katakana, and kanji. 
Pre-requisites: JAPN 102 or equivalent.

JAPN 202 - INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE II

3.00 credits 
This course is a continuation of Intermediate Japanese I. It offers further development of proficiency in modern Japanese at the intermediate level. Students will learn to to master basic vocabulary and be able to use intermediate grammatical forms. Using the grammatical knowledge, they have learned, students will conduct simple everyday conversations. JAPN 210 - JAPANESE CULTURE THROUGH FILM

3.00 credits

This class surveys Japanese film throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, blending film theory, history, and cultural studies across various themes. Course assignments will enhance students' ability to critically analyze visual and written sources and write effectively about them.  These skills are important in any field of study or future career.
Films subtitled in English. Readings and discussions in English.
Pre-requisites: A minimum of Sophomore standing and English Composition I & II (ENGL 111 & ENGL 112)
