The first annual IT day at The University of Akron was held on Thursday, April 22nd in the Student Union. The event was aimed at bringing all technology students together to show off their talents and network with technology professionals.
The morning session was introduced by Dr. George Newkome, Vice President of Research & Dean of the Graduate School, who described how far technology has come during his lifetime, from slide rules to netbooks and his prediction of what would come next. The first keynote speaker was Dr. Sasi Kumar Pillay, CIO, NASA Glenn Research Center, he gave an interesting insight into IT and the challenges of meeting it's workforce demands. After a short break Dave Kevnick and Bruce Cady, Software I/T Architects from IBM described the software architect discipline and talked about the certification process at IBM.
Throughout the day students from UA had their projects displayed on posters, these were judged in the afternoon by local technology professionals from the likes of Dealer Tire, The J.M. Smucker Company, Sherwin Williams, Summit Data Systems, EYEMG, NEO-IASA, JumpStart Inc and UA IT Services.
Manik Dhawan’s project, a cancer classification model with 95% accuracy, was deemed to be the winner. Second place went to Ramakrishna Billakanti, third place to Aaron Barrett and fourth place to Anthony Deeter.
