Dr. Andrew Thomas, assistant professor of marketing and international business, was recently interviewed by WKYC-TV regarding the AirTran/Southwest Airlines merger.
On September 27, it was announced that AirTran has been purchased by Southwest Airlines for $1.42 billion in a deal that merges two of the largest discount airlines in the U.S.
Many fear the merger will result in higher ticket prices and fees for passengers. Dr. Thomas agrees, noting that while the deal is good for Southwest, it will limit consumer choices and likely result in higher prices.
Thomas is a bestselling author who has written several books including Aviation Insecurity: The New Challenges of Air Travel and Air Rage: Crisis in the Skies. He is the Founding-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Transportation Security and founder of AirRage.org.
