Welcome OIF/OEF Veterans and Military Students!

The University of Akron’s Counseling Center would like to thank you for serving our country. We acknowledge that our returning service men and women are important to our campus community. We recognize one of the biggest issues facing combat veterans and military students is social isolation. Although most veterans and military students adjust to deployment and training exercises (e.g., drill, the field, TDY) without problem, some have exhibited mental health issues.

The Counseling Center is here to support your mental health needs as you make the transition from active duty and/or reserve status into student life. We provide individual, group, relationship, educational, and career counseling, as well as workshops on several topics aimed at increasing your academic success at UA. We also provide resources for support services on campus and in the community. We provide ADHD and learning disability (LD) assessments at a nominal fee. Additionally, we have free on-line career testing and exploration tools, as well as a study skills video. All counseling services are provided at no cost to students currently enrolled at UA.

As a part of the UA community, we are here to promote education and awareness of the psychological issues, social, and cultural issues that our veterans and military students may face. One of our goals is to extend this awareness for our staff and faculty as well. Therefore, we will host events that recognize and support our veterans and military students throughout the year.

We also understand that veteran and military students have combat and/or service-specific issues, such as:

  • Anger Management
  • Anxiety
  • Deployment and Reintegration
  • Depression
  • Expiration and Termination
  • Family Issues as a Result of Your Service
  • Financial Difficulties
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Study Skills and Academic Success
  • Substance Abuse
  • Suicide Prevention
