Scholarship Recipient

Kristy Hedrick, inaugural $350 scholarship recipient.Buckeye State Credit Union, UA’s neighborhood partner for more than 80 years, has established a book scholarship to be awarded to the adult learner who achieves the highest level of improvement in the mathematics portion of the Adult Enrichment Program for each term offered in the 2016-2017 academic year.

The inaugural $350 scholarship has been awarded to Kristy Hedrick, a reentry student returning to UA after a 13-year absence. She eliminated two semesters of developmental coursework in mathematics, testing into Statistics for Everyday Life this fall.

The Adult Enrichment Program is a collaboration of UA Adult Focus and Project Learn of Summit County to assist new, returning, or continuing adult students in improving their math and/or language skills to save them money while earning a degree in less time.


2016 Summer Graduate Spotlight

Maria Dixon, UA graduate with a BS in Social Work. Maria Dixon (BS in Social Work) began her college experience through the Adult Focus office as she attended the adult oriented Student Success Seminar (currently called Akron Experience). She used all of the resources available including academic advising, UAAL (UA Adult Learners Student Organization) and was a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the adult honorary society. Maria was a multiple year recipient of the Bernard F. Osher Reentry Scholarship and served as an adult mentor through the office of Multicultural Development. Maria is an exuberant, talented, compassionate individual.


Kristina Winkler, UA graduate with a BS in Biology. Kristina Winkler (BS in Biology) was a reentry student. She had been away from the college atmosphere for an extensive amount of time. She returned to school through the Adult Focus reentry program, including pre-enrollment advising, as well as continuing program advising. She is also a recipient of the Osher reentry Scholarship. Kristina has proven to be a very determined woman.


Tonya Booker, UA graduate with a BA in Sociology and an MA in Public Administration. Tonya Booker (BA in Sociology and an MA in Public Administration) began her college experience with UA's Adult Focus taking the adult oriented Student Success seminar. Tonya used every resource and scholarship opportunity available and also worked as a graduate assistant in Adult Focus running our Adult Enrichment Programs. She sought funding for and operates the Hope Resource Center, a multiple service food pantry in Barberton, Ohio. Tonya completed her assistantship in August and was immediately hired by the American Red Cross.
