Jessica Custer, Social Entrepreneur
Ms. Jessica Custer graduated from The University of Akron summa cum laude in December 2009 with degrees in International Business, Accounting and Spanish. She is currently completing her Master's in Sustainable Development at HEC Paris (France) where she focuses on the topic of social business— particularly, the implementation of sustainable models that create access to critical goods and services typically out of reach for the poor.
As a part of a semester abroad in Peru, Jessica had the opportunity to visit an improverished, floating community in the Amazonian city of Iquitos — an experience which altered both her view of the world and how business can empower her to work for the benefit of others. As a result of this, she began to explore the methods through which business could be used as a tool to catalyze social and economic development.
In 2010, Jessica was awarded a Fulbright Grant to continue this research on the ground in Iquitos, Peru. Taking valuable lessons from this experience, she began her studies at HEC Paris in 2012 and has focused her time and effort on activities that tie business with socially and environmentally sustainable development. She is currently completing a certificate program in Social Business & Poverty Alleviation and upon graduation, she hopes to make a positive impact by utilizing business to create more inclusive markets for vulnerable populations in developing countries.
