AVAILABLE POSITIONS

Below are all available positions. Please note that only some positions (Resident Assistant, Community Assistant, and Student Assistant) are available for non-current staff members. To apply for those positions, you have to have lived in a residence hall for at least one semester prior to applying. 

Resident Assistant

The resident assistant (RA) staff are paraprofessional graduate and undergraduate members of the Department of Residence Life and Housing. RAs report directly to their Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs) and are responsible for establishing and maintaining an atmosphere which will promote the educational, social, cultural and personal development of residents. The RA must project a sense of care and concern for each resident. The following enumerated responsibilities comprise the significant duties assigned to RAs. Other duties may be assigned to RAs by their building supervisor.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

Community Building

  • Create positive, strong relationships, provide resources, build community, and engage residents through frequent interactions. 
  • Establish a living-learning environment on the floor and within the hall through role modeling and involvement. 
  • Participate in development and advising of floor/hall activities, hall government, and encourage students to become active participants.
  • Build a community environment on the floor based on respect, which allows all residents to feel safe, comfortable, and included. 
  • Establish and maintain a cohesive community whose members share personal responsibility for the development of community standards and appropriate student conduct. 
  • Assist, and support, the Department of Residence Life and Housing with the departmental initiatives and events (identified required work dates, co-curricular programs/activities, committees, staff selection, etc.).

Student Conduct & Welfare

  • Abide by and enforce all university policies and procedures, residence hall policies, and local, state, and federal laws as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct, the Residence Hall Handbook, and the Residence Hall Staff Manual(s). Under no circumstances should an RA ignore the violation of a regulation or policy committed by a resident, guest, or fellow staff member, nor violate regulations or policies that residents are expected to follow on- or off-campus. Instead, RAs should confront behavior inconsistent with these policies. 
  • Consult with supervisor and/or the professional staff member on call before, while, and after enforcing policies and procedures. 
  • Provide basic personal care and counsel for students experiencing student crisis or exhibiting Respond immediately and directly to crisis situations, taking appropriate action in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Follow the directions of the professional staff member on call and all other professional staff members; report all pertinent information immediately. 
  • Participate in fire drills, and Lead and organize residents during and after fire alarms, tornado warnings, and other community crisis situations.
  • Will not report to any shift(s) under the influence of any alcohol or drug(s). 

Administrative

  • Participate in a duty schedule in which staff are available for their assigned building/area and conduct rounds of the residence hall(s). Hours for duty nights are 9:00 m. – 6:00 a.m., the following morning. Number of duty nights per RA per semester varies by hall staff.
  • Complete all assigned administrative tasks thoroughly, accurately, and on time (such as incident reports, duty log reports, calling in for duty, survey completion (i.e. EBI), health & safety room inspections, etc.).
  • Attend weekly staff meetings (established Monday evenings between 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.) and scheduled one-on-ones with Keep daily communication as needed with supervisor.
  • Conduct floor/area meetings such as, break meetings, closing meetings, etc. (as deemed necessary), at least once per month. 
  • Work four paid hours each week at the hall service desk. 
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of opening and closing of the residence halls at the beginning and end of each semester.
  • Attend and participate in all student staff training and in-services.
  • Additional duties as assigned. 

Terms of Employment:

Eligibility Requirements Prior to Hire

To be considered for employment, applicants must:

  • Have earned a cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.50 (by start date)
  • Be in good conduct standing with The University of Akron, as determined by the Director of Residence Life and Housing or designee
  • Have completed at least one semester as a fully enrolled student at The University of Akron, or any other institution of higher education
  • Have lived in a residence hall at The University of Akron, or any other institution of higher education, for at least one semester

Successful Candidates

Position Requirements

  • Visually assess the community, surroundings and situations that occur spontaneously and respond appropriately
  • Verbally communicate with residents and supervisors in casual and crisis interactions
  • Use and operate keys, duty phones, computer systems and elevators
  • Access and reach situations where they occur (i.e. inside student rooms, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, elevators and building lobbies)
  • Must be able to complete paperwork, read IDs, participate in fire-safety training, physically able to move quickly through congested and/or crowded situations and effectively communicate to a large group of people
  • Exposure to weather conditions
  • Ability to respond to duties at any hour and for prolonged periods.
  • Lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Climb stairs

Appointment Terms

  • The RA contract term is for one academic year, beginning with training approximately two weeks prior to the start of the fall semester and concluding after May graduation.
  • First year RAs will be reviewed and selected based on full academic year availability for the position.
  • Applicants applying for a spring semester start date (mid-year hires) must meet all eligibility requirements at the time of hire and the contract term will conclude after May graduation.

Meals

  • A board plan is provided for RAs as an aid to facilitate community growth and development. The board plan is provided so RAs can eat with members of their floor, hall and campus community. 
  • RAs will be provided a meal plan option available from Dining Services selected at the discretion of the Department of Residence Life and Housing.
  • If an RA chooses to upgrade from the meal plan provided, the RA is responsible to pay the difference, however if a lesser meal plan is chosen, a refund will not be credited to the RA’s student account. 

Remuneration

  • RAs are provided room costs as compensation from fall training through spring hall closing. 
  • RA staff working during the Thanksgiving, winter or spring breaks may be compensated on a per diem basis.
  • RAs will be assigned to a staff In all probability, the staff room will be a single; however, the Department of Residence Life and Housing reserves the right to assign a roommate as needed.
  • RAs assigned to buildings that will close for winter break are not permitted to stay in their room during the break period. 
  • Please note that accepting a RA position may affect financial aid status. 

Eligibility Requirements During Employment

  • Enroll and successfully complete 12, but no more than 18, academic credits per semester at The University of Akron. Graduate student RAs are required to enroll in and complete 9, but no more than 13, academic credits. Courses must be taken for letter grades (which could include a pass/fail status).
  • RAs demonstrating strong academic performance may petition, in writing, to the Associate Director of Residence Education for permission to take additional courses. 
  • Maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative and semester grade point average 
  • Maintain an active residential student housing contract
  • Maintain good conduct standing with The University of Akron, as discerned by the Director of Residence Life and Housing or designee
  • Live on campus; residence hall placement is at the discretion of the Director of Residence Life and Housing or designee
  • May not hold campus employment outside of the Department of Residence Life and Housing, including compensated student leadership positions, except for employment through the Federal Work Study program
  • First year RAs may participate in 10 or less hours of academic required work experiences (including but not limited to experiences such as student teaching, cooperative education assignments, clinical rotations, internships, etc.)
  • Returning RAs may participate in 20 or less hours of academic required work experiences (as outlined above)
  • Provide supervisor with a copy of his/her class schedule that includes any academic required work experiences prior to the start of each semester.
  • The appointment is subject to the individual’s compliance with all applicable Board of Trustee rules and university policies, the terms of this agreement, as well as the student’s continued good behavior and work performance. The failure of the student to meet this standard, as determined by the university, may result in immediate removal from the position or non-renewal.

Time Commitments

  • RAs are required to devote the necessary time to fulfill their obligations to the position and not to exceed an average of 29 hours per week. This includes but is not limited to specific staff duty assignments, weekly staff meetings, in-service training, service desk shifts, and significant time on the wing/floor and one-on-one meetings with student residents. 
  • Required to assist with opening and closing of the residence halls for all break periods, including remaining on campus until residents have vacated the building and the building is secure. 
  • Required to return to campus prior to the start of the spring semester for additional training as requested.
  • Required to be available and present during identified Residence Life and Housing events throughout the academic year including but not limited to open houses, staff selection weekend, training, health and safety inspections, etc.
  • To ensure adequate coverage in the residence halls and to ensure services are provided to residential students, arrangements for an RA to be away from campus for a weekend must be done with appropriate advance notice and approval by building supervisor.
  • RAs must reserve 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. on Monday evenings for building staff meetings, in-service, and committee meetings which may be held during this period. 
  • RAs will be permitted, with supervisor approval, (for each shift) to pick up service desk shifts (not exceeding more than 10 hours a week). RAs must not exceed an average of 29 hours of total employment per week. 

Managing Other Commitments

  • RAs may participate in up to a combination of 20 hours per week of uncompensated co-curricular activities and off campus
    • Uncompensated co-curricular activities include but are not limited to student organization membership and leadership positions, fraternity/sorority membership, intramural participation or athletics in which the student does not receive an hourly wage or a stipend. 
    • Off campus employment includes paid hours at a non-University of Akron employer regardless of distance to campus or when employed hours occur. It is the responsibility of the RA to ensure that any off-campus employment does not constitute a conflict of interest or conflict of commitment with the RA position as mentioned in the conflict of interest policy. 
  • RAs are required to disclose all uncompensated co-curricular activities and off campus employment, including the hours per week required for each, prior to the start of each semester to ensure compliance with the limit listed above.
  • The amount of hours an RA is permitted in uncompensated co-curricular activities and off campus employment may be reduced at the discretion of the supervisor if there are concerns about job performance and the RA’s ability to fulfill her/his job responsibilities.

    Student Assistant

    Student Assistants (SAs) in the Department of Residence Life & Housing are responsible for assisting with a variety of tasks including administrative functions, door/key access, and room assignments; providing high quality customer service to current and prospective residents and their families; are knowledgeable of campus resources and creating a welcoming, inclusive office and desk atmosphere.

    Position Responsibilities

    • Provide outstanding customer service, appropriate information regarding the Department of Residence Life & Housing, and campus directions/information in person, in an email, or via telephone
    • Operate and update the housing database that includes housing applications, housing room assignments, and temporary access keys and cards
    • Assist with student move‐ins, move‐outs and room changes by helping with preparing check‐in/out packets
    • Provide desk services with clerical office duties including answering telephones with proper etiquette, filing, operating copier and fax machine, and other duties as needed
    • Assist with the marketing of the housing complexes by providing detailed tours, participate in any scheduled University sponsored visit day/special events, and ensuring prospective families and residents receive response to their questions and concerns
    • Explain and enforce policies and procedures regarding housing operations
    • Provide temporary access for vendors
    • Assist in the opening and operation of the Ritchie Hall Service Desk and the Department of Residence Life Housing staff
    • Open and close the Department of Residence Life and Housing including unlocking
    • Assist the various areas within the Department of Residence Life and Housing as needed

    Applicant Qualifications must include the following:

    • Must be enrolled as a University of Akron student
    • Must be in good standing, and maintain that standing, with the University of Akron academically as well as student conduct
    • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills while maintaining confidentiality and following all university policies and regulations (i.e. FERPA)
    • Maintain an ability to remain focused in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions and distractions with a high attention to detail
    • Availability to work a minimum of 10 hours during office hours (Monday‐Friday; 8am to 5pm) and the occasional weekend for special events

    Community Assistant

    Community Assistant (CA) positions are held by both graduate and undergraduate student and are members of the Department of Residence Life and Housing (RLH) eligible to be compensated hourly for working at any of the Department's nine service desks. CA's report directly to the Desk Manager (DM) for the service desk(s) they are assigned to. Therefore, CA’s assigned to multiple desks would report to multiple DM’s. CA’s are available at the service desks to assist students and staff as well as any visitors. The following responsibilities comprise the significant duties assigned to CA’s. Other duties may be assigned to CA’s by their DM, Service Desk Coordinator (SDC), Residence Life Coordinator (RLC), or Associate Director (AD) for RLH.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    General Duties

    • Assist in maintaining a 24 hour service desk by arriving 10 minutes prior to the start of assigned shifts and be available 15 minutes after assigned shifts in the event that another CA does not show up for the following
    • Complete an accurate inventory of all items at the desk at the start of every shift according to prescribed
    • Keep an accurate account of all hours worked in EmpCenter and submit EmpCenter time record by Monday at Noon for previous week hours
    • Keep confidential all information discussed in meetings, memos, or overheard from any of the staff offices unless directed to share the information with residents by a supervisor.
    • Direct all delivery attempts of packages, flowers, to Ritchie Residence Hall.
    • Maintain a clean and orderly service desk by adhering to DMs guidelines for maintaining logs, equipment storage, etc.

    Customer Service Duties

    • Answer the service desk telephone and transfer calls according to guidelines and procedures outlined by the supervisor and the Community Assistant handbook
    • Assist The University of Akron and the Department of Residence Life and Housing in answering questions from students, staff, and visitors or directing students, staff, and visitors to the appropriate means of obtaining the requested information whether in person or via the pone
    • Greet everyone who enters the building with a smile and acknowledgement, according to guidelines outlined in the Service Desk Manual
    • Ensure that all administrators, faculty, and staff are greeted with a smile and questioned to see if he or she needs assistance.
    • Correctly answer resident’s questions concerning vending machines or other maintenance requests
    • Assist residents in contacting the proper authority if they are locked out
    • Accurately log the use of all computer lab access cards/keys
    • Properly distribute supplies to residents (such as toilet paper, trash bags ), if applicable.
    • Ensure that resident ID’s that are given in exchange for equipment, computer lab access, etc. are not lost or stolen and stored
    • Distribute available Residence Life and Housing forms, instruct residents where to turn the forms in, and advise students to contact a Residence Life Coordinator or the Department of Residence Life and Housing if they have questions regarding the regarding the forms.

    Safety Duties

    • Ensure that the alarm panels for the building indicate that all doors are secure
    • Verify the identity of every person who enters the building by checking their ID, ensuring that the picture on the ID matches the person and that said person is a resident of that building
    • Verify the color of the sticker on a residents Zip Card matches the buildings sticker color
    • Ensure that all persons who are a guest of a resident of the building are registered according to the guidelines outlined in the Service Desk Manual.
    • Ensure that all guests are escorted by their host 24 hours a day
    • Report all suspicious, disruptive, or inappropriate behavior to RA, SDC, RLC, AD or The University of Akron Police Department (UAPD).
    • Respond to all emergencies (such as fire, tornado, power outage, etc.) as outlined in the Community Assistant Manual.
    • Handle lost and found items according to guidelines outlined in the Community Assistant Manual

    Community Leadership Responsibilities

    • Assist the Residence Life Coordinator in the implementation of departmental surveys, research studies, hall government elections, etc.
    • Adhere to University Student Code of Conduct, all residence hall guidelines, and CA expectations and
    • Other duties as assigned by the DM, SDC, RLC or AD

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Be enrolled in twelve (12) academic credits at The University of Akron. Graduate student CAs are required to be enrolled in nine (9) academic credits. CAs who drop below full‐time status once hired may not continue to work.
    • Must complete a successful background check
    • Maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and a 2.5 semester grade point average. CA grades will be checked at the end of each semester and summer session.
    • Maintain a good conduct standing with The University of Akron, as discerned by the Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing.
    • Period of employment is contingent upon successful completion of job requirements and no job Training and preparation for Service Desk operation will require the CAs attendance and participation in training and activities prior to the start of the semester.
    • The CA staff is responsible for maintaining 24‐hour coverage of all ten (10) service desks. This will necessitate weekend and late night responsibilities and assistance in covering vacant shifts
    • Salary is $8.80 per hour or $9.80 per hour during night shifts. Night shifts include Sunday through Thursday 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM and Friday and Saturday 8:00 PM – 8:00 CAs eligible for college work study will paid at the equivalent rate.
    • Each CA will be required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week as available shifts permit
    • Any student employee is allowed a maximum of 29 hours per week for all campus employment combined during the academic A maximum of 20 hours for international students.

    Student Coordinator

    The Student Coordinator (SC) is responsible for the assistance of the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) through a supervisory role for the Resident Assistants (RA) at the University of Akron. This position reports to Residence Life Coordinator(s) and responsibilities may include but are not limited to: supervising resident assistant staff, managing building operations and providing care and support for university students. The Department of Residence Life and Housing is a demanding, fast paced, student centered environment. The staff working within Residence Education are specifically responsible for community development, student support, and safety and security of the residence halls. This position is live-in required.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Fulfill 10 required office hours on a weekly basis
    • Facilitate Resident Assistant staff meetings on a weekly to bi-weekly basis
    • Facilitate 1:1 meetings with assigned Resident Assistants on a bi-weekly basis
    • Communicate regularly with assigned Residence Life Coordinator (RLC)
    • Advise Hall Government by attending meetings on a weekly basis
    • Prepare programming materials including marketing items, purchase requests, and advising on program revisions
    • Ensure that Resident Assistants are adequately fulfilling position requirements through the completion of semesterly evaluations
    • Participate in a weekly professional staff meeting to maintain understanding and updates within the department
    • Participate in departmental led events such as Open House, In-Services, Hiring Processes, and other related events
    • Responsible for the overall development and management of assigned residential community
    • Foster a supportive, inclusive environment through community programming and contact with students and staff
    • Responsible for implementing the residential curriculum and academic initiatives and services for residential students
    • Assist in the coordination and implementation of opening and closing of the residence halls at the beginning and end of each semester

    Qualifications:

    DESK MANAGER

    The Desk Manager (DM) is a paraprofessional member of the Department of Residence Life and Housing (RLH) with significant leadership responsibilities. DMs report directly to the service desk coordinator and are responsible for providing excellent customer service and building community through daily interactions with residents and Community Assistant (CA) staff to provide a positive and safe environment for students and guests. The following enumerated responsibilities comprise the significant duties assigned to DMs.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    Supervision Responsibilities

    • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate CAs
    • Manage and maintain operation of assigned service desk 24 hours a day, seven days a week
    • Co-facilitate one CA scheduling meeting prior to the start of classes in the fall semester to finalize the fall semester schedule, one CA scheduling meeting in December to finalize the spring semester schedule, and one CA scheduling meeting in April to finalize the Summer Session schedule
    • Co-facilitate CA selection and training events as necessary throughout year, at least once prior to the start of both Spring and Fall Semesters.
    • Facilitate hall, quad, or all staff meetings for Community Assistants as necessary to address concerns and performance issues
    • Attend all Desk Manager and service desk training activities as designated

     

    Administrative Duties

    • Serve in a Student Assistant capacity in the Residence Life & Housing main office for 10 hours per week
    • Work with the building coordinator in scheduling additional Resident Assistant (RA) service desk coverage during the first week of the Fall Semester until shifts can be finalized with new hires, if necessary
    • Maintain a clean and orderly service desk—display current staffing schedule and CA information, keep needed supplies ready, and maintain a phone and guest log
    • Maintain up-to-date documents using a centralized filing and storage system
    • Verify CA shift attendance
    • Approve, track, manage, and log all CA shift changes
    • Meet bi-weekly with the supervisor to provide an accurate assessment and update on the service desk area, including but not limited to, holding CAs accountable, staff concerns, and changes to the service desk operations
    • Meet weekly with the DM staff to discuss issues faced within service desk areas, including but not limited to, CA hiring, job action, and desk coverage 
    • Maintain accurate logs at desk, including phone, computer lab card, and equipment check out logs.
    • Maintain current database for CAs (e.g. OneDrive, Orgsync, Sharepoint, ect. )
    • Participate in departmental initiatives (e.g. open house, visit days, move-in, ect. )
    • Maintain up to 10 weekly paid scheduled office hours. These hours include management of the service desk and service desk staff, tracking of CA service desk hours, updating the CA warning log, verification and submission of time cards, completing student employment paperwork, being visible and accessible to address needs of residents, guests, RAs, CAs, and RLH staff. These hours need to be logged weekly and submitted to the immediate supervisor for approval

    Customer Service and Community Development

    • Establish and maintain a cohesive community among CAs and residents who share personal responsibility for the development of behavior norms and appropriate student conduct.
    • Promote and maintain a residence hall service desk environment, which meets the physical safety, emotional security, and comfort needs of all residents.
    • Develop and maintain an environment in the residence halls that foster respect for individual rights, promotes community development, and respects the dignity of all members.
    • Assess community growth and development needs by sharing interactions with individual students and spending time at residence hall service desks.
    • Conduct a CA In-Service once per semester and as deemed necessary by the Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing.
    • Intentional interactions with CAs, individually or as a group, to explain and promote policies and programs, assess needs and community goals, and respond to student concerns. Bring any concerns to the attention of the service desk coordinator.
    • Promote and maintain an atmosphere of quality customer service at each service desk.

     

    On Duty Responsibilities

    • Participate in a duty schedule in which student building staff are available for their assigned building/area and conduct rounds of your specific residence hall.
    • Hours for duty nights are 9:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m. (may be adjusted with notice) the following morning. Following last rounds, staff will remain available in their room for the remainder of the duty shift. Each individual building staff, in consultation with the building coordinator, determines the duty schedule.
    • The residence halls do not close for the Thanksgiving or spring breaks; therefore, assigned student building staff are required to cover duty shifts nightly during these periods. For residence halls that remain open during winter break, it is the responsibility of the assigned student building staff assigned to those buildings to cover these duty nights.

     

    Community Leadership Duties

    • Support the RA staff in its programming and community development efforts by attending programs and keeping the staff informed of student issues that he/she becomes aware of.
    • Assist the immediate supervisor in the implementation of departmental surveys, research studies, etc.
    • Adhere to University Student Code of Conduct, Residence Hall Handbook, and CA expectations and policies.
    • Other duties as assigned by the service desk coordinator and/or associate director.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Enrolled in at least 12 academic credits at The University of Akron during the time of Graduate student desk managers are required to enroll in nine academic credits. Courses must be taken for a letter grade.
    • Maintain at least at 5 cumulative grade point average and a 2.5 semester grade point average.
    • Maintain good conduct standing with The University of Akron, as discerned by the associate director.
    • Applicants must have served as a CA in some capacity with the Department of Residence Life and Housing at The University of Akron for at least one semester.
    • Must hold a housing contract throughout the term of employment.

     

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Period of employment is the academic school year. Training and preparation for service desk operation will require attendance and participation in training and activities prior to the start of the semester.
    • The DM will be responsible for the supervision and management of the service desk while it is operational. This will necessitate weekend and late night responsibilities.
    • Must be available to assist with opening and closing of the residence halls at the beginning and close of each semester as well as during vacation periods. 
    • DMs will be assigned to a double-occupancy room, as a single, within the residence halls. The department reserves the right to use the second bed space in times of emergency. The department will do its best to honor roommate requests as it does with any other resident student.
    • DMs are provided room and board from Fall training through Spring hall Room and board is not provided during academic calendar vacation periods.

     

    Service Desk Coordinator

    The Service Desk Coordinator (SDC) is responsible for the assistance of the Associate Director of Residential Education through a supervisory role for the Desk Managers (DM) and Community Assistants (CA) at The University of Akron. This position reports to the Associate Director of Residential Education and responsibilities may include but are not limited to supervising desk manager and community assistant staff, managing desk operations, reviewing and managing student payroll, and providing safety and security for university students. The Department of Residence Life and Housing is a demanding, fast paced, student centered environment. The staff working within Residence Education are specifically responsible for community development, student support, and safety and security of the residence halls front desk. This a required live-in position.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Oversee four Desk Managers in the nine residence halls on campus
    • Fulfill 10 required office hours on a weekly basis in Residence Life & Housing main office
    • Facilitate DM staff meetings on a weekly to bi-weekly basis
    • Facilitate 1:1 meetings with assigned DMs on a weekly to bi-weekly basis
    • Collaborate with the payroll office on a regular basis to manage student employment paperwork and payments
    • Communicate regularly with Associate Director of Residence Education
    • Co-facilitate monthly in-services with DMs to provide ongoing paraprofessional development and training
    • Assist and plan the scheduling of CA desk coverage for the academic year
    • Responsible for the hiring, staff accountability through sanctioning and developmental meetings, and termination of DMs and CAs
    • Participate in a weekly professional staff meeting to maintain understanding and updates within the department
    • Participate in department-led events such as open house, in-services, hiring processes, and other related events
    • Responsible for the overall development and management of the service desks across campus
    • Assist in the coordination and implementation of opening and closing of the residence halls at the beginning and end of each semester

    Qualifications:

    To be considered for employment, applicants must:

    • Have earned a cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.5 (by start date)
    • Be in good conduct standing with The University of Akron, as determined by the Director of Residence Life and Housing or designee
    • Have completed at least one semester as a fully enrolled student at The University of Akron, or any other institution of higher education
    • Have lived in a residence hall at The University of Akron, or any other institution of higher education, for at least one semester
    • Candidate should have understanding of the CA role
    • Candidate must be administratively sound due high volume of emails, collaboration with other departments, etc.

    Renumeration:

    • Furnished apartment with private bathroom
    • $11.49/hour for 10 hours/week

    Student Coordinator for Housing Services

    Job Summary

    Coordinate daily office and assignment operations through various activities such as report compilation, composing correspondence, scheduling meetings, and providing information to the public.  Handle differing situations, problems, and deviations in the work of the office according to the supervisor’s general instructions, priorities, policies, and program goals.

    Essential Functions

    • Oversee departmental student personnel and perform various supervisory duties including hiring and evaluating employees, scheduling, and monitoring work hours, and administering corrective action when necessary in conjunction with the Associate Director, Housing and Conference Services.
    • Oversee the room change process; receive, review, offer, and process general room change requests and correspond with student inquiries regarding room changes
    • Manage distribution, return, and inventory of residence hall keys as a part of the check in, check out, tag key, and room change processes
    • Manage distribution, return, and inventory of temporary access cards; communicate access requests to locking systems
    • Receive, review, and process student cancellation requests according to department guidelines
    • Assist in the coordination and implementation of the online housing application and the online room selection process by troubleshooting applications, corresponding with students, and assigning students to residence hall rooms
    • Accurately update student accounts to reflect credits/charges applied by department
    • Serve as the liaison between Residence Life and Housing and other campus departments, specifically Locking Systems, Physical Facilities Operations Center, University of Akron Police Department, and Environmental Health and Safety, and others as necessary
    • Represent the department at Admissions and New Student Orientation events such as open houses, visit days, and New Student Orientation.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Supervisor

    Reports to the Associate Director of Housing and Conference Services

    Hours

    25 hours per week.  Majority of hours must occur between 8 AM and 5 PM Monday – Friday.

    Compensation

    Student Coordinator level hourly wage.  Free campus apartment.  Apartment meal plan.

    Required Experience

    Minimum of 2 years working in the Department of Residence Life and Housing in any role.
