Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Statistics is to provide students with a quality education in statistics, in which they acquire fundamental statistical skills and develop a sense of statistics as a profession. In addition, our graduates will be prepared for advanced studies in statistics and related disciplines (like data science and analytics) and for the diverse uses of statistics in business, industry, government, scientific research, and society.

We offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Statistics, Statistics/Data Science, Statistics/Actuarial Science and a Minor in Statistics.

Additionally, The University of Akron M.S. Statistics degree is the only masters-level program offered at a public institution in the region, and the Actuarial Science program is one of only two in Ohio hosted by a Statistics department.

The Department of Statistics maintains two instructional computer labs and provides the latest statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, JMP, Minitab, R, etc.

Center for Statistical Consulting

To call in the statistician after the experiment is done may be no more than asking him to perform a postmortem examination: he may be able to say what the experiment died of.

Ronald Fisher at the Indian Statistical Congress, Sankhya, ca 1938.

Our students obtain real-world hands-on experience through our Center for Statistical Consulting by the practical application of statistical processes while interacting with student and faculty researchers and outside clients. Faculty researchers, students working on dissertations and thesis, and non-campus researchers can Request Statistical Consulting Help.
