Godspell comes full circle through costume design
Leading the overall vision of the production team, Director Aubrey Caldwell says, “Steampunk… it combines Victorian elegance with advanced technology, using steam-powered machinery and gadgets to create an alternative history. It's what the past would look like if the future had happened sooner. Our use of the steampunk style will be focused within a post-apocalyptic world in which civilization has lost its sense of community.”
Building on this vision, Costume Designer Mark Snyder-Shulte began to sketch, design, and build costumes that would bring the world and characters of Godspell to life. The focus for the design was clear – use a sepia palette to show this post-apocalyptic world devoid of its color. When Jeremy Winter (UA Theatre major playing the role of Jesus) enters in a colorful appearance, brightness will enter the world again. As the play unfolds, the costumes will change. As each character grows, the costumes will reflect their experience and outlook on the post-apocalyptic world around.
