On Stage With The Cast

Dean Coutris, MBA 2013

Alumni returns to UA Main Stage

My first show at The University of Akron was The Merchant of Venice. I remember reading the play in a British Literature class I took in my undergrad... and I loved the play. So when the opportunity came up to audition for a Shakespeare play at UA, I decided to do it.

I graduated from UA with an MBA in 2013, and I like to jokingly say I unofficially minored in theatre with all the plays I've performed in and classes I've taken at UA. Since graduating, I work in Akron, using my business degree while I have performed at various theatres throughout Northeast Ohio and co-founded a long-form improv group called "Just Go With It" which has been a lot of fun!

With my time in the UA Theatre Arts department, I've learned that theatre serves a greater purpose than satisfying some sort of selfish need. It can be impact and entertain audiences, and fulfill performers simultaneously.

UA Theatre Major takes flight

The reason why I chose to study theatre at The University of Akron was because I wasn't satisfied with my previous major. The only thing I really wanted to do was act. Following my dream to become an actor led me to switch my major.

In my experience with The University of Akron's Theatre Department, I learned to just do something. Try it, and if it doesn't work, you at least tried. You can always fix it. You can only fail if you don't try.
