Miller Humanities Center Grant Program
The Sally A. Miller Humanities Center offers competitive grants to support hands-on humanities at the University of Akron with a focus on history and related disciplines. We define “hands-on” expansively to include activities that encourage students and faculty to touch, experience, and create as part of studying the humanities and the past.
Undergraduate Research Grants
A limited number of grants are available to support history majors in their junior or senior years who are conducting advanced historical research or undertaking work in applied or public history. Grants are awarded in amounts up to $500. Students may use these funds to cover reasonable costs, including but not limited to traveling to an archive, research equipment and supplies, reproducing (i.e., photocopying, ordering copies, etc.) research materials, and presenting at a scholarly conference.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis during the academic year. Applicants should submit a one-page proposal, an itemized budget, and a CV to Prof. Gina Martino.
Graduate Research Grants
Graduate students in the MA in Applied History program are eligible to apply for a limited number of grants. We are particularly interested in applications from students working on their capstone projects. Grants are awarded in amounts up to $500. Students may use these funds to cover reasonable costs, including but not limited to traveling to an archive, research equipment and supplies, reproducing (i.e., photocopying, ordering copies, etc.) research materials, and presenting at a scholarly conference.
Applicants should submit a one-page proposal, an itemized budget, and a CV to Prof. Gina Martino by March 2, 2026.
Faculty Research and Teaching Grants
These grants support part-time and full-time faculty in History and Classical Studies who are engaged in research or teaching activities that fall under the hands-on humanities umbrella. We are especially interested in receiving proposals in the following areas:
- Experiential Learning Opportunities: To support faculty in offering students hands-on opportunities (field trips, equipment, etc.) within a course or as a standalone experience.
- Research in Hands-On Humanities: To support faculty in conducting research in hands-on humanities. We are especially interested in research that promises to enrich students’ learning.
- Course Development: To support faculty in developing courses with a significant hands-on component.
- Workshops: To support faculty in holding a workshop that introduces students or faculty to techniques in hands-on humanities.
A limited number of grants will be awarded on a rolling basis each year in amounts up to $2,500. Larger proposals will be considered on a case-by-case basis during the academic year. Faculty should submit a 1-2 page proposal, an itemized budget, and a CV to Prof. Gina Martino.
