Biography
Dr. Maria Adamowicz-Hariasz, Associate Professor of Modern Languages, received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of Pennsylvania (1994) and M.A. in French Literature from the Maria Curie-Sklodowska in Lublin, Poland (1982). Before coming to the University of Akron, OH in 1995, Dr. Adamowicz taught at Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Adamowicz specializes in 19th-century French literature and francophone culture and literature. Her research interests also include development of linguistic and intercultural competencies. She has published on French serial novel, Haitian literature and culture as well as on global education and cross-cultural competence in the context of study abroad in the U.S. and in France. She has presented her work at numerous conferences in the U.S. and abroad (Canada, France, Switzerland).
From 2008 to 20012 she was a co-director of FATITI (Franco-American-Teachers-in Training Institute) funded by the U.S. State Department (http://www.uakron.edu/education/community-engagement/fatiti/).
In 2003, she received the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Chairs’ Outstanding Achievement Award for Teaching, and in April 2011 she was the recipient of the UA ASG and the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost Outstanding Faculty Engagement Award.
Since 2007, Dr. Adamowicz, selected by ACTFL (American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages), serves as national and international OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) Certified Tester of French. She serves as a Certified Trainer of OPI in French since 2012.
