Transfer Students Q&A

Meet Sean Graham

Major: Sport Analytics

Minor: Applied Statistics

Hometown: Buffalo, NY

Transferred from: Medaille University

Involvement at UA: President of the Sport Analytics and Business Association (SABA), College of Business Dean’s Team Member, University of Akron Ambassador, Williams Honors Student, Vice President of the Men’s Club Soccer Team, Student Assistant at Bierce Library

Q. Why did you transfer to UA?

At my previous school, I was an Applied Mathematics major with a concentration in Data Analytics. I always knew that I wanted to somehow use those analytical skills and apply them in the sport industry. So, when I found out that The University of Akron had a Sport Analytics program, it was an easy choice. UA is one of only four schools in the nation who offer this program as an undergraduate major, and after hearing all of the opportunities that Akron provides, I knew I had to transfer.

Q. What was transferring like for you?

Transferring can always feel intimidating at first, however, Akron helped guide me through the entire process and made it very easy for me to get all the right paperwork in. I knew I made the right decisions soon as I arrived to campus as well. On the first day of classes, I remember a student held the door open for me, we quickly realized we were going to the same class, sat next to each other, and to this day he is still one of my closest friends.

Q. What are your favorite things about UA?

If you’re driven to reach your goals, The University of Akron gives you the tools and opportunities to make them possible. What I love most about UA is how it helps students discover possibilities they never even imagined for themselves. I still remember hearing President Nemer say, “The University of Akron makes it very convenient to be a big fish in a big pond,” and I couldn’t agree more.

Q. Any advice for students starting their college transfer search?

I highly suggest getting involved on campus. Finding a student organization that can help pursue your career has been one key reason why UA was a perfect fit. I would also suggest finding a few fun clubs to join. Some of my favorite memories at Akron are playing flag football and intermetal volleyball and then getting ice cream after. I’ve met some of my best friends by getting involved and just saying yes to going to different events.
