About the Play

The University of Akron (UA) Theatre Program begins its 2020-2021 season with an adaptation of “The Waves,” a novel by Virginia Woolf which follows six friends at various points throughout their lives with lush and vibrant stream-of-consciousness monologues. Directed by Dr. Brian Schultis, UA Senior Lecturer of Theatre, the playpoem features a cast of 6 UA students.

UA’s “The Waves” embraces the opportunities of a virtual platform and will question what’s possible in the current landscape of live performance. Online showings for “The Waves” will be hosted November 5, 6, 7 at 7:00 P.M. and November 8 at 2:00 P.M. Tickets are free for all audiences with preregistration, but seating is limited. To reserve tickets online, visit theWavesUA.eventbrite.com or make reservations by calling the ticket office at (330) 972-7895 or emailing administration.arts@gmail.com.

Director Brian Schultis says: “This production will weave these stories to create an intimate virtual theatre piece that embraces the challenges of theatre in the midst of a pandemic – going back to the simple but profound foundations of the actor’s work – breath, sensual awareness, rhythm.”

Panels and Talkback

Each performance will be followed by a live-broadcast panel discussion, open to everyone. Topics will include Language and Storytelling, Early 20th Century Women's Issues, and Virtual Production. Guests can participate in any of these events, regardless of which day they see the show. Please see our event page for more detailed information on each of these talk-backs.
