Eboné Roots Salon, a new solo exhibition by Myers School of Art graduating senior Jyra Petite, explores the texture, flow, and color of African American hair. The salon-inspired exhibit embraces the beauty of African American hair while critically examining its emotional and physical dynamics within society.
About the Artist
Jyra Petite is a painting & drawing major graduating with an BFA at The University of Akron. Her paintings explore abstract representation within African American hair with inspo from its texture, movement, and color. Petite is interested in the tactile experience of hair and hair products on feel and flow, often using a microscope to reveal unseen details and create new visual perspectives. Each piece captures layers and shifting textures, from the soft and fluid to the bold and structured, reflecting on the beauty of African American hair.
