About Akron Law’s Commitment to Community Service

As part of its commitment to the Akron community, Akron Lawadopted a community service/pro bono requirement for graduation in 2010. Under the terms of this requirement, Akron Law students must complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service prior to graduation. Of these 30 hours, at least ten must be pro bono and five must be focused on serving those of limited financial means. The Akron Law faculty and administration hopes that this requirement will not only impact current students, but will also foster a spirit of service in Akron Law graduates as they move on to the practice of law.

Since its inception, the law school and the Akron community have shared a unique and vital relationship. The well-being of that relationship is essential to the success and longevity of the law school. Thus, it is the duty and privilege of Akron Law, its students, and alumni to strive to better the community that nearly all live and/or work in.

The community service/pro bono program is coordinated by Professor Joann Sahl, Director of the Civil Litigation Clinic. Professor Sahl elicits community service/pro bono opportunities and refers them to the students. Some of the available opportunities include Akron Law Cares, Akron Law Takes the First Step, Community Legal Aid, the public defender’s office, CASA/GAL, local food banks and hot meals programs.  For more information, visit http://www.uakron.edu/law/community/ .
