Oral History of the Crime Victim Assistance Field Video and Audio Archive

The Oral History of the Crime Victim Assistance Field Project was funded in 2002 by a grant from the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. It is one of many projects developed by Justice Solutions, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing rights, resources, and respect for victims and communities hurt by crime. The video archive includes 55 hours of digitized video interviews with 65 of the key individuals involved the development of the crime victim assistance field.

OhioDance Records

OhioDance, formed in 1976 as the Association of Ohio Dance Companies, is a state-wide organization that inclusively supports the diverse and vibrant practice of dance.  The records consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, publications, reports, news releases, news clippings, directories, financial records, photographs, and audio/video recordings.

Ohio Edison Company Records

Range: 1869 - 1964 Size: 315 cubic feet Record Group: 99/102

The Ohio Edison Company (OEC) was formed in 1950 after a merger between the Ohio Public Service and Ohio Edison. With its headquarters located in Akron, Ohio, the OEC was responsible for providing services to 569 rural communities and 22 municipalities. The OEC continued to expand to become the FirstEnergy Corporation in 1996. The records include minute books, ledgers, cash books, operating reports, and photographs from over 200 subsidiary companies that formed Ohio Edison and Ohio Public Service. The records also include information on street car and interurban development including annual reports, timetables, motormen reports, financial records, and photographs.

Ohio Canal Sesquicentennial Commission Records

Range: 1974 - 1978 Size: 2.5 Record Group: 99/150

The Ohio Sesquicentennial Commission was organized in 1977 as a subcommittee of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Its chief objective was to inform the public of the economic and historical significance of the Ohio Canal for the canal's 150th anniversary. The records include correspondence, fundraising materials, publications, and newspaper clippings that document the work of the commission during its two-year program.

Ohio Ballet Records

Range: 1972 - 1991 Size: 22 cubic feet Record Group:

The Ohio Ballet was a professional company in residence at The University of Akron and a resident company of Playhouse Square Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The records include financial records, correspondence, performance schedules, and donor lists. An auxiliary collection includes lighting designs and stage cues for numerous performances of the Ohio Ballet, as well as notes from Thomas Skelton, one of America's most distinguished lighting designers.


Oenslager, George, Papers

Range: 1850 - 1972 Size: 3 cubic feet Record Group:

George Oenslager (1873-1956) was a chemist who worked for the B.F. Goodrich Company in Akron, Ohio. He discovered that a derivative of aniline accelerated the vulcanization of rubber with sulfur, which was crucial to the commercialization of both natural and synthetic rubber. His papers consist of correspondence, financial records, photographs, biographical information, chemistry notes, manuals and equipment, and patents.

Collections are classified into the following broad categories:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections documents regional (mainly Akron and Summit County) history, and other designated collecting areas. Special Collections materials include personal and family papers and historical records of local governments, businesses, and civic and community organizations. Collection strengths are the history of the rubber and polymer industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
