Mrs. Ben H. Ruhlin was a “prayer crusader” from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio who spent two and a half years crusading to have prayer restored to schools during the 1970s through the Prayer Campaign Committee. The records include correspondence, publicity, petitions, and other materials relating to Mrs. Ruhlin and the committee’s efforts to restore prayer to public schools.

The Rotary Club of Akron, Ohio, founded in 1914, supports youth programs and partners with organizations on projects for the betterment of the community. The records include rosters, committee materials, membership files, programs, newsletters, financial records, portraits, publications, and audit files.


Ross, Rev. George Everett, Papers

Rev. George Everett Ross was Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron, Ohio, one of the largest churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio and played a pivotal role in the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Ross was an alcoholic who was a crusader for the addicted and homeless. His papers include sermons, correspondence, newspaper clippings, course outlines for classes he conducted, class notes, term papers, and phonotapes. They also include church bulletins and documents relating to diocesan and parish matters of the Episcopal Church. 


Rohner, Ralph

Contains materials involving personal, business, and legal matters directly related to the Akron area. Also comprises a record of school papers and notebooks of Eva Rohner from grade school (Sacred Heart Academy) to her education at Buchtel College.


Resnik, Judith, Papers

Judith Resnik (1949-1986) of Akron, Ohio served as an engineer and astronaut with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 1978 until she died during the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986. Her papers include training manuals, technical materials, notes, photographs, schematics, memos, press kits, and briefings relating to manned space flight and her time with NASA.

Ray, Roy L., Papers

Range: 1978 - 1995 Size: 3.0 cubic feet Record Group: 99/121

Roy L. Ray was a politician and public servant from Akron, Ohio who served as Deputy Service Director in 1971, Public Utilities Commissioner in 1973, Budget Director in 1975, and Finance Director in 1977.  He served as Mayor of Akron from 1980 through 1983 and Ohio State Senator from 1987 to 2001. His papers consist of campaign records for both of his mayoral campaigns, materials from his time as mayor, correspondence during his time as an Ohio State Senator, and diplomas, certificates, and memorabilia.

Collections are classified into the following broad categories:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections documents regional (mainly Akron and Summit County) history, and other designated collecting areas. Special Collections materials include personal and family papers and historical records of local governments, businesses, and civic and community organizations. Collection strengths are the history of the rubber and polymer industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
