Project SOAR
Project Description
Project SOAR is a project funded by the Office for Violence Against Women, where we are developing and evaluating a culturally tailored, trauma-informed yoga program for Black and Brown women who have experienced intimate partner violence. We have completed focus groups with women with lived experiences and relevant providers and are currently recruiting for an open trial of the yoga program with 8-10 participants. PREP students would be involved in recruitment, team meetings with community partners to discuss program feedback and troubleshoot recruitment, provide support for assessments and delivery of the yoga program (e.g., help with children of participants, collect forms and data) and will be offered the opportunity if they wish to stay on the project to assist with exit interviews with participants who completed the program (these interviews will likely occur during the summer).
What Would You Learn?
The PREP student would learn about the intervention development process, grant-funded research, and randomized clinical trials by working closely with the two graduate assistants on the project. The PREP student will also learn about intimate partner violence and the healing impact of yoga. Especially motivated students who are willing to stay on the project through the summer may have the opportunity to collaborate as co-authors on presentations of data from Project SOAR.
Commitment:
5 hours per week (translates to 2 credits of PSYC497: Independent Reading & Research). This includes attendance at lab and project meetings (required; virtual) as well as additional team meetings, when possible. Most of the time will be “lab hours” and can fit within the student's schedule. Ideally, candidates are available during yoga classes, which are tentatively scheduled for Wednesdays from 6:30-7:45.
