Business: Accelerated BS Accounting/Master of Taxation

Accelerated BS in Accounting/Master of Taxation

About the Degree

The Accelerated BS Accounting/Master of Taxation program, the only one of its kind in the State of Ohio, offers students who wish to pursue a professional career in taxation the opportunity to complete both the BS Accounting (BSA) and Master of Taxation (MTax) in 150 semester credit hours. Students who complete the program are eligible to sit for the CPA examination in the State of Ohio and many other states. In addition to a broad undergraduate degree in accounting, Accelerated BSA/MTax students develop substantive technical and professional knowledge needed to function as taxation specialists in the United States.  Features of the MTax program include course taught by experts with significant tax experience, emphasis on tax practice, courses meet during the evening, and exceptional reputation among employers. Graduates of the program are highly recruited.

The MTax curriculum consists of 24 credits of required taxation classes and six credits of elective classes in specialized taxation areas. Students may use the six credits of electives to focus their taxation studies in areas that fit their interests.

Students with an interest in both law and taxation may consider the highly attractive joint Juris Doctor (J.D.)/MTax degree, which provides a specialized graduate education in taxation by adding the equivalent of only one semester to the time that it normally takes to complete the J.D. program.

Students in the MTax study tax research methods, corporate tax, partnership tax, state and local tax, tax policy and ethics, international tax, risk and uncertain tax positions, and tax accounting methods.

Salary and Career Outlook

All of the Big Four, most regional and local public accounting firms, as well as Fortune 500 companies and governmental entities actively recruit Accelerated BS/MSA students. Because this is an integrated program, Accelerated BS/MTax students often complete a full-time internship in the junior year of the BSA program and receive offers at the end of the internship. Employers consider The University of Akron’s School of Accountancy as one of the leading programs in Northeast Ohio. About 40 employers visit the campus each fall to recruit our students for internships and full-time positions. Starting salaries offered to our students are competitive.

Graduates from the MTax program work as tax specialists in public accounting, industry and government. They help businesses and individuals comply with tax laws and regulations, address tax litigation issues, lead tax planning activities, assist with corporate strategy, and help clients with addressing disputes that involve the IRS or state/local agencies. Demand for tax specialists with MTax degrees is high and should be buoyant for the foreseeable future.

Starting salaries for entry-level tax specialists with the MTax Degree is between $50,000 and $60,000 per year, depending on prior experience.
