Nutrition/Dietetics Fundamentals

Registered Dietitians make life better through nutrition. They:

  • develop food and nutrition programs
  • supervise meal preparation and oversee the serving of meals
  • prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and recommending dietary modifications.

     To become a Registered Dietitian (R.D.), you must:

    • complete the academic degree requirements and 1,200 hours of supervised experience in dietetics practice
    • obtain appropriate verification
    • pass the national Dietetic Registration Examination

      Our graduates succeed:

      • Over the past five years on the national Dietetic Registration Examination, graduates of the coordinated program have achieved a 93 percent pass rate, while graduates of the didactic program achieved an 80 percent pass rate — both exceeding the national average.

        Degree information

        UA’s School of Nutrition and Dietetics in the College of Health Professions offers two academic paths to earn a bachelor's of science in dietetics

        1. B.S. in Coordinated Program in Dietetics

        One of only four in Ohio, UA’s Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) enables students to complete a 1,200-hour supervised internship along with their regular academic work. Students are placed in a variety of supervised settings, including medical centers, long-term care facilities, school nutrition programs, health departments, and wellness centers. These students are then eligible to take the national Dietetics Registration Examination immediately after they graduate.

        2. B.S. in Food and Environmental Nutrition

        This degree program addresses strong national demand for expertise in food and nutrition, employment needs of food manufacturers and related businesses, and the growing interest in sustainability and locally grown food resources. Students learn such vital skills as understanding the science of food production, developing and analyzing recipes, creating product information labels, and marketing recipes and food products using cutting edge information and technologies.


        The University of Akron Nutrition Center

        The Nutrition Center integrates nutrition education, training, services and research. As a result, UA students gain market-driven practice skills for the workplace — preparing them to meet emerging health care needs and changing demands of the profession.


        Recognized excellence

        The Coordinated and Didactic programs at The University of Akron are granted accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.

        Real-world Experience

        Completion of an internship is required before a student can take the national Dietetics Registration Examination.

        Students in UA’s Coordinated Program complete internships through supervised programs at more than 80 sites in Northeast Ohio, including:
