Corrosion Engineering

Fundamentals

The University of Akron offers the only corrosion engineering bachelor’s degree program in the country. The program incorporates a multidisciplinary curriculum to train students to understand the origins of corrosion and manage its effects. The program also integrates a strong management component to help our students develop the skills that are necessary for executing real-world projects. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Corrosion Engineering.

Corrosion engineering requires a broad knowledge and cuts across many disciplines. Students receive instruction in:

  • chemical engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • civil engineering
  • electrical engineering
  • material science and engineering
  • physics
  • chemistry and electrochemistry
  • computational modeling

More Information

Our faculty

  • incorporate real engineering design challenges into courses
  • collaborate on research with students and colleagues at UA, other schools, government agencies and private industries
  • bring industry experience to the classroom

    Akron Advantage

    Hands-on research

Experience corrosion engineering firsthand through the research facilities available in the Department of Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering:

    • Corrosion and Materials Performance Lab
    • Applied Colloid and Surface Science Lab
    • Catalysis Research Lab
    • Multiphase and Solids Processing Lab
    • Supercritical Fluid Lab

    Real-world experience

Gain important practical professional experience through the optional co-op and placement program. Through co-op, you’ll alternate semesters of work and school following your sophomore year. As an added benefit, you’ll earn a competitive salary.

    Student organizations

Interact with other engineering students and professionals in the field through organizations such as:

    • Tau Beta Pi (engineering honors society)
    • Women in Engineering
    • National Society of Black Engineers
    • American Institute of Chemical Engineers
    • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
    • Corrosion Squad (National Association of Corrosion Engineers student chapter)

    Career Opportunities

An individual with a Bachelor of Science in Corrosion Engineering can find employment in any industry that is impacted by material degradation — including the oil and gas, chemical processing, and construction industries. Corrosion engineers are the second highest paid type of engineer, according to the National Society of Professional Engineers.

    Outlook

As infrastructure weakens due to time and weather conditions, the demand for corrosion engineers is high to mitigate or slow down the effects of corrosion. UA’s unique program means our students are in top demand.

    Career services

Career Services helps students and alumni explore and reach career goals. They connect students to employers for internships, jobs, and careers.
