Biography

Professor Okoh received her Ph.D. from New York University. She teaches courses in African history, Colonial and Decolonization History, Gender and Minority Politics, and the History of the African Diaspora. Her current research focuses on the development of minority identities in the oil-rich region of the Niger Delta and their impact on civic participation over time in Nigeria.  This research engages the new scholarship on empires by focusing on how local actors in the colonies interpreted and reshaped imperial policies both on the ground and at the imperial center. Her work also contributes to our understanding of the role of ethnicity in modern African politics.
